Buying a used trawler yacht presents two very interesting choices, do you opt for older classically-styled models packed with detail, or the next generation of trawler yachts, offering a cleaner, more minimalist take on the design and often good value for money?

Whichever way you go, a trawler yacht should deliver a great cruising package, ideal for the  family or friends to spend long periods of time aboard.

Similarly, most trawlers regardless of age or size will deliver smooth passagemaking from semi-displacement hull designs with fine entries to slice through the waves at speeds of around 20 knots - 25 knots. You may also find older, or more specialist models offering displacement-only speeds.

Older models will also be available in a range of layouts with aft cabin designs very popular and a raised bridge deck that isn’t quite big or luxurious enough to be considered a flybridge.

Later examples from the last decade shift towards aft cockpit designs, with proper and very impressive flybridges that stretch right aft, presenting the opportunity to stow a tender or leave the space open for free-standing furniture. 

Unlike other yachts, you will find a good deal of trawlers that were or are built in the far east, predominantly Taiwan and China. This is not seen as a negative, with trawler yacht builders in these regions having plied their trade for decades and delivering a high quality product.
