Take control of your yacht purchase with our expert guides & advice.
We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.
The dealer approved or certified yacht is a used boat that comes with a level of warranty or guarantee. And will, hopefully, also be presented in very good condition.
Often sold by main dealers, representing specific yacht builders, the yacht may have been refurbished to some level, with parts and support from the original builder, creating a near-new vessel. But there are also examples of independent brokers offering a certified yacht.
These yachts often demand a premium over the market value, but can be seen as a good option due to the peace of mind and overall condition.
The yacht in question may simply be a good example, or there may have been extensive work to the exterior and interior, with new upholstery, polished and renewed topsides and superstructure, as well as engine and ancillary equipment servicing.
Regardless of how good the yacht looks, it is still a used boat, so you should employ the services of a marine surveyor.
When buying a used boat, it is vital you gather as much historical documentation as possible. Unlike cars, yachts do not have registration documents that can be updated from one change of ownership to another. Instead, yachts have original builders' certificates, confirming the year of build, and Bills of Sale which are generic documents that record change of ownership, including amounts paid, signed by the buyer and seller.
To support these two fairly unreliable documents (the builder's certificate is often lost, especially on older vessels) engine service history, maintenance invoices, moorings and marina fees, and even fuel receipts can help build a picture of where the yacht has been, how it has been used and the level of care employed.
It is highly advisable to employ a surveyor as part of a used yacht purchase. The survey itself will check on the overall condition of the yacht, its engines and equipment. Any offer made on a vessel can be subject to survey, the final report giving a verdict on the yacht’s asking price and overall value.
Buying a yacht of between 3-5 years of age will give you a good mix of all three. At this age, the yacht will have only recently come out of its warranty period, so servicing and upkeep should be good, will be of the latest design, and gone through a useful period of devaluation, including any new boat taxes.
As vessels age, so their value can increase, but so to do running costs, while design can start to date.
