Design & Construction

Designed around a semi-displacement wood hull and superstructure she features a 5.49m beam and a 1.52m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 89 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

Built in 1939 to a John Trumpy design, Innisfail is one of the few surviving Mathis-Trumpy fantail motor yachts and remains remarkably close to her original appearance following an extensive restoration programme. Her long, low profile, fine bow and graceful fantail stern come from an era when cruising yachts were designed around comfort, visibility and elegant proportions rather than maximising interior volume.

Innisfail has been invested heavily in order to reverse decades of alterations. A false flybridge was removed, traditional cap rails were reinstated, the pilothouse was rebuilt to closely resemble the original design, and the stem and bow were reconfigured in 2011 to restore the yacht's original profile. The modern stack was also replaced with one more faithful to the yacht's 1939 appearance.

What stands out today is how usable the exterior remains. Wide teak-covered side decks run the length of the yacht, while the extended foredeck shade creates a sheltered outdoor lounge with built-in seating and excellent views ahead. The restored signal mast and clean deck arrangement preserve the yacht's classic lines without sacrificing practicality.

Aft, the covered deck functions as the social heart of the yacht. The space is unusually generous for a 27.7m (91ft) yacht, with a large dining table, extensive built-in cabinetry and refrigeration, while clear enclosure panels allow the area to remain open in good weather or protected when conditions change. Beyond this sits the yacht's signature fantail, where a curved built-in settee follows the shape of the stern and creates one of the most distinctive seating areas found on any classic American yacht.

The boat deck above provides additional lounging space, tender storage and elevated views, while the yacht's modest 1.52m (5ft) draft opens up cruising grounds that remain inaccessible to many larger modern yachts.

Interior Design

The restoration philosophy inside was not to modernise Innisfail beyond recognition but to retain her character while making her practical for contemporary cruising. Much of the furniture dates from the 1920s and 1930s, and the rich mahogany joinery remains central to the yacht's atmosphere.

The main saloon stretches across much of the yacht's beam and length, creating a surprisingly large gathering space. Large windows line both sides, bringing in natural light and maintaining a close connection to the water. Painted overheads with varnished beam laths preserve an authentic Trumpy detail, while the seating arrangement centres around an exceptionally long sofa and generous corner settee.

One of the yacht's most desirable design features is John Trump's galley-up arrangement. Rather than hiding the galley below deck, it sits on the main deck between the wheelhouse and saloon, making daily life aboard more practical. Large windows, modern appliances and extensive storage allow it to function as a genuine cruising galley rather than a period showpiece.

Forward, the wheelhouse remains wonderfully traditional. A large wooden helm, parquet sole, bench seating and extensive timber detailing create an atmosphere that feels much closer to a classic ship than a modern motor yacht. Modern navigation systems have been added discreetly, allowing the yacht to cruise comfortably while retaining the feel of her original design.

Accommodation

Innisfail accommodates six guests across three ensuite staterooms, a layout that remains remarkably practical despite originating from the late 1930s.

The full-beam owner's stateroom sits amidships on the lower deck. Originally arranged with twin berths, it was later adapted to incorporate a queen berth while retaining the yacht's traditional character. Large drawer units, a cedar-lined hanging locker and additional storage beneath the companionway stairs provide more usable storage than many modern yachts of similar length.

Aft, the VIP guest cabin occupies the full beam beneath the fantail. This cabin retains its original arrangement, with twin fore-and-aft berths, generous drawer storage and two cedar-lined wardrobes. The position at the stern creates a quiet and private guest space with a distinctly classic feel.

The third guest cabin sits amidships and also features twin berths, storage beneath each bed and its own ensuite bathroom. Marble-tiled showers and updated Tecma heads bring modern convenience to accommodation that remains faithful to the yacht's heritage.

Crew accommodation is arranged forward and supports up to five crew. The layout includes a captain's cabin, two bunk cabins, a crew head and a dedicated crew dinette, allowing the yacht to operate comfortably for extended cruising.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Detroit Diesel (8V71N) 228hp engines running at 1200rpm, motor yacht Innisfail is capable of reaching a top speed of 11 knots, and comfortably cruises at 8 knots. With her 4,164 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 1,000 nautical miles. Her semi-displacement hull design means she offers a great balance of space and speed.
