Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and a steel / aluminium superstructure she features a 9.6m beam and a 5m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 669 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards.
Exterior Design
Asteria is one of those yachts that leaves little doubt about her purpose. Built in 1970 as a salvage tug by Anastassiades & Tsortanides and later transformed into a luxury explorer yacht, she retains the proportions and presence of a commercial vessel rather than a conventional superyacht. Her navy-blue steel hull, high clipper bow, substantial freeboard and upright superstructure give her the look of a ship built for difficult conditions and long-distance cruising.
At 49.4m (162.1ft) with a 9.6m (31.5ft) beam, Asteria prioritises capability and deck space. The profile is dominated by a long working foredeck and a high bridge positioned for excellent visibility during offshore passages and remote-area navigation. Large deck cranes, tender stowage areas and a touch-and-go helipad capable of accommodating a five-tonne helicopter underline her expedition credentials.
The exterior arrangement supports extended life outdoors. The aft deck combines dining and lounge areas with two substantial teak wet bars, while the upper deck adds further social space centred around a Jacuzzi sheltered beneath a bimini. A flybridge with sunpads, a large swimming platform and dedicated tender handling areas provide the sort of practical outdoor spaces expected from a yacht designed to spend long periods away from traditional cruising grounds.
Unlike many modern explorer yachts that borrow commercial styling cues, Asteria began life as a genuine working vessel. That heritage remains visible in her strong lines, practical deck layouts and substantial volumes. It also helps explain how the yacht has completed voyages through the Northwest Passage and operated in both Arctic and Antarctic regions. Alongside her expedition capability, she also carries a sauna, gym, cinema, barbecue area, tender garage and an extensive collection of tenders and water toys.
Interior Design
The 2019 refit transformed Asteria's interior while preserving the character expected from a vessel with genuine expedition roots. French designer Charles Zana introduced a contemporary scheme that balances warmth and comfort with the scale and structure of the original ship.
Natural light plays a major role throughout. Large windows line the social spaces and accommodation areas, softening the yacht's commercial origins and creating strong connections with the surrounding landscape. This becomes particularly valuable during extended cruising in destinations where the scenery forms a major part of the experience.
Photographs reveal extensive use of custom timber craftsmanship, much of it arranged in geometric patterns that add texture and depth to the interior. The main saloon features navy-blue deep-cushioned sofas, substantial joinery and a large television for onboard entertainment, while white carpets and lighter furnishings balance the richness of the woodwork. Nearby, a formal dining room centres around a large dining table for ten guests, with expansive windows providing uninterrupted views during meals.
One of the yacht's most striking features is the multi-deck central staircase. Rising through an atrium crowned by a circular skylight and decorative ceiling artwork, it creates a dramatic focal point and draws natural light deep into the vessel. Elsewhere, bespoke carved panels and traditional artworks reflect a level of craftsmanship rarely seen aboard contemporary yachts.
The impressive curved bar area is another standout feature. Detailed timber work extends across the bar front, ceiling and surrounding cabinetry, creating a social hub that feels more akin to a private club than a typical yacht lounge.
The wheelhouse offers perhaps the clearest link to Asteria's past. Original elements including the ship's wheel and engine telegraph remain in place, while modern navigation systems, radar and multifunction displays provide the technology expected aboard a contemporary explorer yacht.
Accommodation
Asteria accommodates up to 14 guests across seven cabins and carries up to 11 crew in six crew cabins.
The owner's suite occupies a privileged position within the layout and is complemented by a flexible adjoining cabin. This additional space can serve as a children's cabin, private study, gym or wellness room depending on the owner's requirements, giving the suite a level of adaptability rarely found aboard yachts of this size.
Guest accommodation includes three VIP cabins and two twin cabins, creating a layout well suited to families and mixed-age groups. Large windows throughout the guest areas provide excellent natural light, while marble bathrooms and carefully considered finishes bring a contemporary feel to spaces that remain practical for long-range cruising.
The accommodation reflects the yacht's dual personality. There is enough comfort for extended family use, but also the operational capacity needed for ambitious expedition programmes. Eleven crew members can be carried onboard, allowing the yacht to support helicopter operations, extensive toy inventories, remote-area cruising and lengthy voyages without compromising service levels.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by 1 x diesel Caterpillar (3516B) engines, motor yacht Asteria is capable of reaching a top speed of 14 knots, and comfortably cruises at 11 knots. She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.
