Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement ice class steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 33'11" beam and a 9'6" draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 974 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in early 2019. Launched in October 2021 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in December 2021.
Exterior Design
Shinkai is a full-custom 55m (180.4ft) expedition yacht designed for serious high-latitude work. Her steel hull carries Ice Class notation and Polar Code assessment, with heavier plating and reinforced waterline sections to withstand young ice and drifting debris.
The profile makes no attempt to hide its purpose. The hull is finished in a dark steel-grey that plays well against the crisp white superstructure, giving a strong, functional look without losing balance. Windows are slim and carefully aligned, more about resilience and steady daylight than decoration, yet they still deliver outward views and light into the decks. The superstructure rises in clean, stepped layers with broad guardrails and generous walkaround decks, underlining the practical Vitruvius explorer language.
At the stern, the open aft deck is a working stage. A heavy-duty Palfinger knuckle-boom crane sits over a shallow reinforced well that carries the 6.3-tonne three-person submersible. Wide, uncluttered deck space makes room for two tenders and even a containerised 4x4 vehicle, kept sealed from the elements. Boarding into the sub is done directly from the main deck for safety in freezing waters.
Guest-focused outdoor areas shift higher up. The bridge deck carries a plunge pool ringed with sunpads, while the private foredeck cockpit linked to the owner’s deck provides a calm lookout. Crowning the yacht, the tall mast is more than just a navigation tower: it houses an elevator that connects all decks to the sundeck, ensuring everyone can share the best vantage point.
Stability is handled by a large gyro installation weighing in at around 23 tonnes, supported by conventional fins for higher speeds. The system was chosen to keep the yacht steady during sub operations and at rest in icy waters, reinforcing her role as a platform for exploration.
Interior Design
The interior takes its cue from Japanese-influenced simplicity and calm. Natural materials and a muted palette keep the atmosphere warm and practical for long periods on board, with a homely feel rather than formality. Social spaces are laid out for expedition rhythm: a full-beam dining room on the owner’s deck provides a protected indoor hub with an open connection to an outside dining area aft, while the main saloon favours soft tones and tactile finishes for easy, everyday use between runs ashore or dives.
Navigation and operations areas are set up for serious range and self-sufficiency, with the bridge flanked by guest-oriented vantage points and quick routes to the exterior. The elevator within the mast is a quiet piece of engineering theatre that makes every deck accessible without fuss, so all guests can share the best views regardless of mobility or sea conditions.
Accommodation
Shinkai offers accommodation for up to 10 guests in 5 suites comprising an owners cabin. Guest spaces are gathered on the upper levels to preserve clear working areas aft while giving those on board better sightlines and a greater sense of privacy. The owner’s deck is arranged with two master suites positioned forward, each fitted with a king-size bed and its own adjoining office. Wide windows bring in light and views, while doors lead directly onto a private foredeck cockpit designed for quiet observation. Four further guest suites sit on the deck below, providing comfortable accommodation for family and friends.
Crew are housed in seven cabins with space for 12, allowing for smooth operations and the specialist support required for expedition cruising and dive work. The overall arrangement keeps guest movement away from the busy aft deck and ensures easy, weather-protected access to the dining areas, the bridge-deck pool and the observation points.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V 2000 M72) 12-cylinder 1,468hp engines running at 2250rpm, motor yacht Shinkai is capable of reaching a top speed of 14 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 36,984 gallon fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 5,500 nautical miles at 12 knots.
