Exterior Design
Project MG has been designed as a 106m (347.8ft) wind-assisted hybrid expedition yacht, by VPLP Design and to be built at Turkey’s Norse Shipyard. Her lines follow the upright style of large-scale explorers, while the hull has been engineered with a wide beam for natural stability without the need for deep keels or additional ballast. This approach reduces drag from stabilisers and improves overall efficiency at sea.
The yacht’s most interesting features are her four OceanWings sails, which rise above the superstructure like vertical aircraft foils rather than traditional fabric rigs. Each rigid sail can rotate a full 360º and self-adjusts to wind speed and angle for optimal thrust. They can also reef automatically in high winds, or fold flat against the deck when clearance is needed. Together, the sails are expected to reduce fossil fuel use by 30-50%, with additional gains from solar arrays on deck and hydrogeneration beneath the hull.
Lifestyle amenities planned for the exterior include a commercial-grade helipad with hangar facilities and a large beach club at the stern, designed to open up for waterside living. Wide fold-out terraces will further connect guests with the sea.
Performance & Capabilities
With the sails deployed, Project MG will be able to cruise quietly at around 12 knots without engine assistance, and up to 15 knots with hybrid diesel-electric propulsion engaged. Her range is designed for 8,000 nautical miles on engines alone, supplemented by effectively unlimited “sail miles.” Route planning systems will integrate wind forecasts and ocean currents into navigation, like clipper ships once did, adding distance where needed in order to cut fuel burn.
