Weekending Yachts FAQ

We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.

  • There is much to connect these boats. The main difference is physical size, or rather volume. A cruiser needs to fit in more internal space, to cater for longer stays. A weekender still needs to accommodate but it can reduce the amount of social space and storage provided, whilst there is less need for sheltered accommodation - given you will theoretically be at sea for less time.

A weekender is also more about speed. Whilst most cruisers today are fast, not all are. But a weekender is about getting there and back in a couple of days, so speed is a prerequisite.

But the real difference between a weekender and cruiser is in the subtleties of how it will be used - the buyer's considerations, preferences and priorities. Here, a cruiser can more easily be used as a weekender than the other way around.

  • This will depend on how many people are to be onboard, but let's assume it's a family of four. For accommodation, you need at least two cabins, a shared toilet compartment, ideally a shower, space to move around if the weather turns nasty and cook. A yacht of around 8m-10m (26ft - 33ft) will deliver this, but as the minimum.  Budget will then allow for the luxuries of a larger more spacious yacht.

You then need to consider where you'll be boating, whether it's in open water with the chance of bigger seas, or in more sheltered areas. If the former, a larger boat will deliver a better, more competent ride, so 12m might be a better target size.
