Trawler Yachts For Sale

New and used trawler yachts for sale are built for long-range cruising, with a focus on efficiency, stability, and time spent on board. Often referred to as long range trawlers or ocean trawlers, these yachts are designed to cover distance at steady speeds while keeping fuel use low and motion predictable.

Browse new and used trawler yachts for sale across a wide range of sizes, from compact owner-operated models to larger expedition-style yachts suited to offshore passages.

Trawler yachts are defined by their practical layout and seaworthy design. High bulwarks, wide side decks, and secure walkaround access support safe movement, as well as handling in mixed conditions. Many designs use full-bodied hulls with deeper drafts, and some feature steel hull trawlers for added strength and durability on longer routes.

Trawler yachts typically offer large saloons, enclosed galleys, and multiple cabins, along with the storage and tank capacity needed for extended trips. This makes them a natural fit as a liveaboard trawler, whether for coastal cruising or longer passages. Smaller models are also popular as a Great Loop trawler, where range, access, and efficiency matter more than speed.

When comparing new and used trawler yachts for sale, buyers focus on range, fuel capacity, and engine setup, as well as hull type and onboard systems. Compared to planing motor yachts, trawlers run slower, use less fuel, and maintain a steadier motion at sea.

Trawler Yacht Key Features:

  • Long-range cruising with low fuel consumption
  • Displacement or semi-displacement hulls
  • Stable ride supported by keel or stabilisation systems
  • High internal volume and storage capacity
  • Secure deck layouts for safe movement on board

trawler yacht FAQ

We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.

  • The trawler yacht may be based on the boats that worked the North Atlantic Ocean but that's where the fishing connection stops.

A modern luxury trawler is no more, or less, suited to a spot of fishing than any other motor yacht.  That is to say you can happily fish from the cockpit, as you can on, say, a flybridge yacht. But if offshore fishing is your thing, with all the batewells, rodholders and fighting chairs you desire, a sportsfisher is for you.

  • Trawler yacht construction has tended to be the preserve of smaller yards, focused on producing high-quality yachts in lower numbers. This has led to a reputation for higher, albeit deservedly so, pricing for a given hull length.

These higher prices are often joined by good residual values, so any extra outlay is often protected.

More recently, mainstream builders have joined the trawler market, with contemporary interpretations that deliver trawler style and practicalities with no added premium.

  • Yes. Trawler yachts are built for long-range cruising, often described as long range or ocean trawlers, as they use displacement or semi-displacement hulls for efficiency and control over distance. Many are designed to meet CE Category A (Ocean), so they are built for offshore conditions, as well as extended passages away from shelter. Cruising speeds tend to sit around 8-12 knots, while large fuel tanks and efficient diesel engines support extended range.

  • Steel hull trawlers are often chosen for strength and durability, especially for ocean use, as well as resistance to impact. GRP or fibreglass hulls are lighter, easier to buildmaintain, and more common in smaller yachts. Steel also allows for heavier displacement and longer range, while GRP suits closer coastal cruising and owner-operated use.

  • Yes, and many are set up as liveaboard trawlers. Layouts focus on usable space, with proper galleys, full-size saloons, and multiple cabins, as well as tank capacity for water and fuel. Systems also tend to support longer stays, including generators, heating, and sometimes watermakers, so owners can remain independent for longer periods.

  • A wing engine is a secondary, smaller engine fitted alongside the main engine, used as a backup. It allows the yacht to maintain slow forward movement if the main engine fails, which is important on long passages or offshore routes. Wing engines are common on ocean-going trawlers, as they add redundancy and improve safety.

  • Sometimes very little. Modern-day trawler yachts can be stylistically very similar to a flybridge. However, other models can be more loyal to their fishing boat forebears. But many trawlers do have a flybridge, so the connection is usually there.

Trawlers often differentiate themselves with tall superstructures and bow sections, an upright style, semi-displacement hulls, and more traditionally-toned interiors.

  • Yes, and they are one of the most common choices. Most Great Loop trawlers need an air draft of around 19ft (5.8m) or less to clear fixed bridges, so folding masts or hinged radar arches are often required. Draft also plays a role, as sections of the route can be shallow, so many suitable trawlers draw under 5ft (1.5m).

Range and fuel use are just as important, as long stretches between fuel stops favour efficient displacement cruising at around 7-10 knots. Single diesel engines are common, as they reduce fuel burn and simplify maintenance, while wide side decks and bow and stern thrusters also help with close-quarters handling in locks and marinas.

For longer sections, especially exposed coastal legs, build and stability still matter. Some owners prefer heavier displacement hulls or semi-displacement designs, as well as stabilisers for comfort, although full ocean capability is not essential for the full route.
