Trawler Boats For Sale

Trawler boats for sale are built to go the distance, running at steady speeds as they use displacement or semi-displacement hulls for fuel economy and control. They suit owners who plan to travel far and stay out longer.

Space works hard on a trawler, as wide beams and full hulls allow for proper saloons, enclosed galleys, and cabins that remain usable at sea, as well as the storage needed for longer trips. Many owners spend weeks or months on board, whether along the coast or on routes such as the Great Loop.

When comparing trawler boats for sale, range sits at the centre, as engine setup, tank capacity, and hull form shape how far you can go and how often you need to stop. Most run single or twin diesel engines tuned for low-speed efficiency, also giving a steady motion when conditions change. Compared to planing motor yachts, they run slower, use less fuel, and carry more.

The roots come from working boats, as many trawlers draw on commercial hull forms built for long hours and mixed conditions, with layouts and systems adapted for private use and time on board.

Trawler Boat Key Features:

  • Long-range cruising capability
  • Displacement or semi-displacement hulls
  • High fuel efficiency at low speeds

trawler boat FAQ

We're committed to making yacht buying easier, so if you can't find what you're looking for just ask.

  • Fuel consumption varies with engine size and displacement, but most trawler boats run efficiently at low rpm. A single diesel engine in the 100 to 300hp range may burn 5 -15 litres per hour (1.3 - 4 US gallons per hour) at 6-8 knots. Larger boats with engines in the 300 to 600hp range may burn 15-40 litres per hour (4 - 11 US gallons per hour).

  • Yes. Trawler boats are often easier to handle, as they operate at lower speeds, typically around 6-10 knots, so there is more time to react when manoeuvring or docking. The hull form also helps, as displacement and semi-displacement designs track straight and respond in a predictable way, especially at low speed. Heavier displacement gives momentum at low speed, so the boat feels steady rather than twitchy, while a keel helps it hold a straight line and protects the propeller in shallow water.

Many models use single diesel engines, which simplifies operation and reduces maintenance, and close-quarters handling is often supported by bow thrusters, and sometimes stern thrusters too, so the boat can be moved sideways when docking.

That said, size still matters. Larger trawler boats bring more systems and require more planning, so smaller models tend to suit first-time owners best.

  • A trawler boat is a motor boat designed for steady, fuel-efficient cruising, using a displacement or semi-displacement hull. These hulls move through the water (so displacing it) rather than pushing up and reducing their wetted surface like a planing hull, so cruising speeds are typically limited by hull length, often around 6-10 knots, but fuel burn remains low and range increases.

  • Not always, but stabilisation becomes more important as size and passage length increase. Larger trawler boats often use active fin stabilisers, which operate underway, as well as gyro stabilisers, which also reduce roll at anchor. Some long-range boats use paravane stabilisers, mounted on outriggers, which provide passive roll damping with no power draw.

  • Many are built for coastal and offshore use, with some designed to meet CE Category B (Offshore) or Category A (Ocean) standards. These boats are built for heavier conditions, with stronger construction, higher freeboard, and greater displacement. Offshore-focused designs may also include watertight bulkheads, dual fuel filtration systems, and redundant steering or propulsion.

  • A semi-displacement trawler uses a hull form that operates efficiently at low speeds, while also allowing higher speeds when required. Most cruise at 8 to 12 knots, with the ability to reach the mid-teens, although fuel consumption rises quickly. The hull typically combines a finer entry with flatter aft sections compared to a full displacement design.

  • Range will depend on displacement, fuel capacity, and speed, as well as hull efficiency. Smaller trawler boats with tanks around 500-2,000 litres (132-528 US gallons) often achieve 300 to 800 nautical miles, while larger models with 3,000+ litres (792+ US gallons) can exceed 1,000 nautical miles. Range increases sharply at lower speeds, as fuel burn drops off once the boat settles at hull speed, typically around 1.2 to 1.4 times the square root of waterline length.

I.e. the longer the boat, the faster it can go efficiently.

    As a rough guide:-

    • A 10m (33ft) boat will cruise efficiently at around 6-7 knots
    • A 15m (49ft) boat at around 7-9 knots
    • A 20m (65ft) boat at around 8-10 knots

If you try to push beyond that speed, the boat starts to climb its own bow wave, which takes a lot more power and fuel.
