The 18m catamaran entered the water in Stralsund in July and is now being used to validate the interaction between solar generation, battery storage, electric propulsion and onboard energy management ahead of her world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
Sea Trials Put the PY60's Energy System Under Load
The current stage of testing is focused less on individual components and more on how Pioneer One functions across complete operating days. According to Pioneer Yachts, systems previously commissioned separately are now being run together while engineers measure solar generation, battery storage, propulsion and energy management under real conditions.
The work is intended to establish how the yacht's Integrated Energy Architecture performs once variables such as power demand, charging and propulsion loads begin changing throughout the day. Rather than adapting a conventional power catamaran around electric motors, Pioneer developed the yacht around solar-electric operation from the start. Hull geometry, weight distribution and proportions were shaped around the energy requirements of the propulsion system.
The electrical architecture runs at 48 volts, while propulsion comes from twin 50kW motors. A 16.7kWp solar installation feeds a 48V LFP battery bank with a listed capacity of 187-246kWh, while Pioneer specifies an 11-22kW range extender.
Performance Data To Follow
The builder says measurements gathered aboard Pioneer One are being used to validate and refine the yacht's performance before verified figures are released. That distinction is significant because the figures currently published for the PY60 remain specification data rather than confirmed results from the present trial program.
Pioneer lists a cruising speed of 7.5 knots and maximum speed of 11 knots. The motor yacht measures 18.30m long and 8.98m wide, with a lightship displacement of approximately 30 tonnes. She also carries 1,472 liters of fuel for the range extenders and 600 liters of fresh water, supported by a 105-liter-per-hour watermaker.
Energy use across longer periods, solar yield under changing conditions and the interaction between storage and propulsion will provide a more useful indication of how the PY60 behaves during everyday cruising.
Owner-Led Cruising Shapes Later PY60 Hulls
Pioneer One will continue serving as the reference vessel for the PY60 program after the current trial period. Founder and CEO Mike Frank is set to operate the first multihull yacht himself, allowing Pioneer Yachts to gather operational data after formal commissioning rather than ending development once the boat reaches production specification. The builder says experience from the first hull will feed into later PY60 units.
The PY60 also offers approximately 250 square meters of living space across three levels and carries Category A Ocean certification. Exterior design and naval architecture are credited to Cossutti & Ganz alongside the Pioneer design team, while Micheletti+Partners worked with the yard on the interior.
Pioneer currently lists its development schedule as launch in July, sea trials and validation through summer, followed by the first public presentation at Cannes in September.
Catamaran World Premieres Buyers Should See at Cannes 2026

It offers four to six-cabin layouts and open or enclosed flybridge options. At the other end, the Sunreef Ultima 88 is a larger, faster platform focused on performance and volume, confirmed as Sunreef’s headline world premiere at Cannes alongside its other power and sailing catamarans.
