Cannes, FranceThe 32m expedition yacht Q.M. was delivered to her owners in 2019 by Turkish shipyard Numarine. Her interior design and exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of Can Yalman, while Umberto Tagliavini is responsible for her naval architecture.
Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and a GRP superstructure she features a 8m beam and a 2.28m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 299 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in late 2017. This was the third yacht built on the 32XP design. She was completed at Numarine's Gebze yard in Turkey where she was commissioned and delivered to her owners in March 2019.
Exterior Design
Q.M. is the third Numarine 32XP, delivered in 2019, and she has the blocky, upright profile that set the XP line apart from the yard’s faster performance yachts. Can Yalman drew both the exterior and interior, with Umberto Tagliavini responsible for the naval architecture. At 32.5m (106.6ft) with an 8m (26.2ft) beam and just under 300GT, the yacht carries a lot of volume on a relatively compact footprint.
The exterior is easy to pick out. Q.M.’s grey steel hull rises almost vertically at the bow, with large angular windows cut into the forward sections and a band of dark glazing running through the superstructure. Forward raked wheelhouse glass adds another strong geometric line, while the comparatively low GRP upper structure keeps the yacht from looking top heavy. The steel hull and FRP superstructure were part of the model’s long range brief, giving Numarine the freedom to build a broad full displacement hull without pushing the yacht over the 300GT threshold.
The main deck aft is arranged as a complete outdoor dining and lounging area, with a central table, built in seating, sunpads and a bar. Large sliding doors open directly into the saloon, so the aft end of the main deck works as one long social area when the weather cooperates.
Above, Q.M. has one of the 32XP’s most useful pieces of deck planning. The large upper deck aft serves as the owner’s terrace when clear, but it was also engineered as a working tender deck. A 2,500kg crane can load boats and toys there, and the deck was designed to accept a tender of around 9m (29.5ft) plus two PWCs. Once everything is launched, around 50m² (538sqft) becomes available for lounging, games or outdoor entertaining.
The flybridge adds another substantial guest level with dining for 12, lounge seating, an upper helm and a wet bar equipped with a barbecue, refrigerator, ice maker and sink. A dumb waiter connects this level directly with the galley below, which is a small detail but a useful one when meals are being served several decks away.
Forward of the wheelhouse, seating, a folding table and sunpads turn the foredeck into another guest area without losing the working deck functions farther forward. At the opposite end of the yacht, the hydraulic transom opens to form the bathing platform and reveal a proper beach club with a lounge, bar, shower, changing room and day head. Water toy storage sits close by, so the lower stern earns its keep even when the tender deck above has been cleared.
Interior Design
Can Yalman gave Q.M. a warmer interior than the exterior might suggest, with earth tones, dark timber and lighter upholstery throughout. Large windows do much of the work in the main saloon, which combines a generous lounge with formal dining and opens aft through broad sliding doors.
The main deck also includes a dedicated gym with full height glazing towards the sea, positioned close to the central lobby. It is a useful bit of planning on a 32.5m yacht because the gym gets its own room without being pushed into the beach club or squeezed into a guest cabin. The galley alongside is sized for longer trips, with three full height refrigerators, a wine cooler and substantial storage.
Noise control was given unusual attention for a yacht of this size. The guest and crew accommodation was built using a box in box system, with the individual cabins isolated from the main steel structure. Engines, gearboxes, generators and pumps were also mounted to reduce vibration transfer, with Van Cappellen involved in the acoustic work. Q.M. was reported at below 37dB in the principal suite with the engines running and around 30dB at anchor, which helps explain why the 32XP was conceived for overnight passages as well as daytime cruising. The technical specification called for the yacht to meet or exceed RINA Comfort Class.
Accommodation
Q.M. accommodates up to 12 guests across six suites, an unusually high cabin count at this length. The arrangement gives her two large principal cabins on separate decks, followed by four guest suites below.
The upper deck suite is now used as the owner’s cabin and opens aft onto the large private terrace and tender deck. Its bed faces the sliding glass doors and the horizon beyond, while the room also has a dressing area, seating, desk and large en suite with twin basins and a rain shower. A retractable bimini can shade part of the deck immediately outside.
Forward on the main deck is a second full beam suite that can work as a substantial VIP or second master. It has a king size bed, large hull windows, seating and a choice of one large bathroom or a split his and hers arrangement around a central shower.
Four further cabins sit on the lower deck, with two doubles aft and two twins forward, all ensuite. Crew accommodation is separated in the bow for five, with a private captain’s cabin, two twin crew cabins, crew mess and laundry.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (C18 ACERT C Rating) 715hp engines, motor yacht Q.M. is capable of reaching a top speed of 14 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 29,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles at 9 knots.
