Designed and engineered in the Netherlands by Weel Sluijter Design, Studio Delta Naval Architects, Julian Moore Design and the Outer Reef team, the new model shares its principal dimensions and three-cabin format with the existing Outer Reef 540 Adventure, but adopts aluminum construction, quad Mercury outboards and a substantially different approach to its exterior spaces.
How Is the 540 Adventure Different From the 540 Adventure Sport?
Despite the similar names, the 540 Adventure and new 540 Adventure Sport cater to noticeably different styles of ownership.
Both measure 17.2m overall with a 5.5m beam and 1.2m draft, and both retain a three-stateroom lower deck. Outer Reef also quotes approximately 2,000 nautical miles of range at economical cruising speeds for each model. The similarities become less pronounced once their construction, propulsion and exterior layouts are considered.
The standard 540 Adventure uses a resin-infused FRP hull and is powered by twin 600hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels driving conventional shafts through V-drive transmissions. Its configuration is closer to the traditional owner-operated passagemaker, with a flybridge, upper helm station, boat deck and a 450kg tender davit.
The 540 Adventure Sport instead has an aluminum hull and superstructure and is powered by four 500hp Mercury SeaPro V12 outboards, producing 2,000hp in total. Its upper structure and aft deck have also been reworked around outdoor use and water access rather than the conventional flybridge and boat-deck arrangement of the standard yacht.
For prospective buyers, the distinction is therefore broader than propulsion. The regular 540 Adventure offers a more traditional long-distance cruising layout, while the Sport places much greater emphasis on equipment, watersports and time spent around the water.
More Space for Tenders, Toys and Diving Equipment
The Sport's aft deck is where Outer Reef has made that change most obvious. Fold-down balconies extend the usable deck area on both sides, creating a larger waterside space at anchor. The layout of the boat has been planned around owners who expect diving, paddleboarding and personal watercraft to form a regular part of their cruising rather than occasional activities.
Storage provisions include space for multiple SEABOBs, dive equipment and an onboard dive compressor. Stand-up paddleboards can be carried on the roof, keeping them readily accessible rather than occupying deck space.
More substantial equipment can be accommodated aft. Outer Reef says the Sport has capacity for a Williams 345 jet tender or similar tender alongside a personal watercraft, an unusually extensive toy package for a yacht of this length.
The arrangement also provides useful separation between equipment and guest accommodation. Outer Reef has retained the same three-cabin capacity found aboard the regular 540 rather than giving over lower-deck volume to additional storage. That makes the Sport particularly relevant for buyers who might otherwise be looking at more performance-led adventure yachts but still want proper accommodation for longer periods aboard.
Inside the 540 Adventure Sport
On the main deck, the Sport has a more open arrangement incorporating the salon, galley and pilothouse within the same level. An L-shaped settee provides the principal interior seating area, while the helm includes a Stidd helm chair and a weatherproof side door providing direct deck access. Large windows run along the superstructure, helping maintain sightlines from the interior toward the surrounding water.
The galley has also been specified with longer stays in mind. Equipment includes two undercounter refrigerator/freezers, a dishwasher, cooktop and oven, supporting the sport yacht's intended use beyond short day trips and weekends.
Accommodation follows the basic format established by the standard 540 Adventure. The full-beam owner's cabin is positioned amidships with a king-size berth and private bathroom. A forward VIP has a queen-size berth, while the third cabin to port uses over-under bunks. A second bathroom serves the forward accommodation, and optional crew quarters are also available.
Quad Mercury V12s Replace the Diesel Shaft Layout
Propulsion provides perhaps the clearest technical separation between the two 540 models. Where the regular Adventure relies on 1,200hp of twin-diesel shaft power, the Sport receives four 500hp Mercury SeaPro V12 outboards.
Outer Reef has not yet released a maximum speed or normal cruising speed for the new model, so its performance advantage cannot yet be quantified. The 2,000hp installation nevertheless gives the Sport a fundamentally different drivetrain, with the maneuverability and installation advantages associated with large outboards.
The builder continues to target approximately 2,000nm of range at economical speed, meaning long-distance cruising remains part of the brief despite the Sport's more performance-oriented propulsion.
For owners comparing the two boats, propulsion may ultimately be one of the deciding factors. Buyers seeking conventional diesel shafts and flybridge passagemaking have the established 540 Adventure, while those drawn to outboards and a more activity-led deck layout now have a separate option on essentially the same footprint.
From the 540 Adventure Sport to the 780 Adventure
The Sport also reflects the wider Outer Reef Adventure Series concept established by the Outer Reef 780 Adventure. Measuring 23.95m with a 6.75m beam, the steel yacht offers up to 3,200nm of range, three or four guest staterooms and two additional forward cabins. Its foredeck carries a tender up to six meters and two Jet Skis, while the aft locker can store equipment or serve as a dive center.
YachtBuyer reviewed the first Outer Reef 780 Adventure after its appearance at the 2025 Cannes Yachting Festival, with Reviews Director Jack Haines awarding it four out of five stars. The review praised its heavy-duty construction, substantial lazarette and engine room, large flybridge and more contemporary styling, while noting that finishing and sound insulation could be further developed on the first hull.
The 780 Adventure will return to the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival from September 8-13. While the 540 Adventure Sport remains at the pre-order stage, it brings some of the larger yacht's emphasis on equipment, diving and watersports into a smaller owner-operated platform, giving buyers a choice between the conventional diesel-powered 540 Adventure and the more recreation-focused Sport.
