Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 19m beam and a 5.3m draft. The yacht is built over 6 decks with an internal volume of 7,922 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.

She was delivered to her owners in May 2010.

Exterior Design

Katara is a 124m (406.8ft) Lürssen with a very particular way of handling scale. Espen Øino’s exterior uses long covered decks, deep overhangs and big cut-outs through the superstructure to stop the yacht feeling like one solid block. There is a lot of yacht here, but the side profile has more air in it than you might expect.

Privacy is worked into the deck plan rather than added afterwards. The main guest areas sit well inside the hull line or beneath broad roofs, so there are plenty of places to be outside without feeling exposed. The long covered side decks are useful too, especially in hot climates, giving both guests and crew shaded routes along the yacht rather than leaving movement to open decks.

The bow mixes working and guest use quite neatly. Personal watercraft and equipment are kept right forward, while a small outdoor salon sits further aft with low seating, a dining table and shelter from the structure above. That separation matters. The working end stays working, but the guest space does not feel like an afterthought.

Aft, the decks step down in wide layers towards the water. The upper helipad is fully built into the deck rather than hung off the stern, and below it the guest decks sit under large scalloped canopies that give real shade rather than token cover. At sea level, the stern opens into a broad beach club and swim platform, with the whole area reading as a proper waterside zone rather than a narrow strip at the transom.

The 2022 Nobiskrug refit included a full repaint, which matters on a yacht like this because so much of the exterior depends on clean white surfaces and dark glazing working together. The refit also brought major technical work behind the scenes, but visually Katara still carries the same low, layered look that made her distinctive from launch.

Interior Design

With very few interior images available in the public domain, what is known is that Alberto Pinto designed the interior in a traditional style, using warm timber, marble, gold-toned detail and a neutral base. That points to a richer, more formal atmosphere than the exterior, which is quite restrained for a yacht of this size.

The available material suggests a classic residential feel rather than a stark modern one. Warm wood tones sit against pale stone and cream upholstery, with decorative detail used to add depth rather than to turn every room into a statement.

The 2022 refit included interior work, but the public release does not spell out which guest spaces changed or how far the original Pinto scheme was altered. I would keep that part factual and say only that the interior received further work during the refit, rather than claiming a redesign.

Accommodation

Katara accommodates up to 34 guests in 18 suites.

That is a very large guest count for a private yacht, but the scale of the platform makes it workable. The deck plan has enough depth and separation for guest areas, staff movement and crew service to run alongside one another without everything crossing through the same spaces.

Crew accommodation is for up to 95, which tells you a lot about the yacht’s operating model. Katara is set up to function almost like a private floating estate, with the staffing, technical support and housekeeping needed to keep a yacht of this size running over long periods.

The yacht also has an elevator, which helps movement across the decks and becomes more important as yachts reach this scale.

Performance & Capabilities

Katara is powered by twin MTU 20V 1163 M94 diesels producing 9,925hp each. Top speed is around 20 knots, with a cruising speed of about 15 knots.

With 500,000 litres of fuel, the yacht has a quoted range of roughly 5,000 nautical miles at 15 knots. That gives her serious long-range capability without asking the machinery to run at a particularly conservative speed.

Stabilisers support comfort underway and at anchor, while the yacht’s full-displacement hull keeps the emphasis on range, ride and long-duration cruising rather than outright pace.

The 2022 Nobiskrug refit was substantial on the technical side. Engines and generators were fully refurbished, the propellers were replaced, shafts realigned, bridge and navigation systems upgraded, the HVAC system overhauled and the crew galley modified. A new gym was also part of the work. Taken together, it was a serious refresh of the machinery and hotel systems rather than a cosmetic yard period.

Amenities

The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea. For the ultimate relaxation experience, the yacht plays host to a luxury spa. Ensuring everyone on board can enjoy the water to the fullest, luxury yacht Katara offers a large beach club connected to a swim platform, with plenty of space for lounging and soaking up the sea views. The yacht features a tender garage with storage for a range of toys and accessories. Underwater lights create a dazzling light display when the sun goes down and an elevator makes the yacht fully-accessible. Katara also features deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.
