Fourth Damen YS 53 Support Yacht Rafter Launched at Antalya Facility

Damen Yachting has launched the 53m support yacht Rafter at its Antalya shipyard, with delivery scheduled for later this year following final outfitting and sea trials.

Designed entirely in-house, the fourth Damen YS53 platform continues the Dutch builder’s established approach to purpose-built support vessels, with exterior design, interior design, and naval architecture all handled by Damen Yachting.

Series momentum continues

The latest launch builds on steady momentum for the Damen Yachting Yacht Support line, a concept Damen introduced to expand the operational scope of large yacht ownership. Since entering the market, the yard has delivered more than 20 dedicated support vessels, now operating worldwide across cruising, expedition, and research programs.

The YS53 series sits at the center of this strategy. Following the delivery of the third unit, Emotional, in August 2025, the platform has continued to attract owners seeking greater flexibility beyond the limits of a traditional superyacht. Each unit is designed to operate either alongside a mothership or as a standalone vessel, supporting extended cruising plans and more complex onboard operations.

What makes the YS53 design successful is the way it expands what Owners can do during their time on the water. By providing additional space for crew, tenders, toys and specialist equipment, the platform enables more ambitious programmes and greater operational freedom."

According to Damen Yachting, demand has grown in step with changing owner priorities, particularly around exploration, water sports, and logistical independence.

A platform shaped around utility and scale

At the core of the YS53 design is a clear focus on usable space and operational capability. The main deck spans more than 200 square meters and is left largely open, creating a configurable working area for tenders, toys, submersibles, and specialized equipment.

A 15-tonne crane supports the handling of large tenders and heavy loads, reinforcing the yacht's role as a logistical platform. This setup allows owners to shift high-impact activities - from diving operations to helicopter support - away from the main yacht, freeing up space and reducing onboard constraints.

The reinforced deck is also engineered for touch-and-go helicopter operations, further extending the vessel’s operational range and versatility. This added capability is particularly relevant for remote cruising or expedition-style itineraries, where access and support infrastructure may be limited.

Axe bow design

The YS53 draws heavily on Damen’s background in commercial offshore vessels, particularly its fast support ship designs. This heritage is most visible in the platform’s axe bow, a defining feature that improves seakeeping and comfort across a wide range of conditions.

Built for reliability as well as endurance, the hull form supports long-range operation with reduced motion in challenging seas, making the vessel suited to both open-ocean passages and more demanding environments.

This crossover between commercial engineering and yachting requirements remains central to the Yacht Support concept, positioning the YS53 as a functional extension of a superyacht fleet rather than a secondary luxury vessel.

Durable spaces shaped for working yachts

While the exterior prioritizes capability, the interior has been arranged to support extended use on board. Accommodation is provided for up to eight guests and a crew of 10 plus the captain, with layouts structured to balance operational efficiency with onboard comfort.

Damen’s in-house interior team has focused on durable materials and practical layouts, ensuring that spaces can withstand intensive use without sacrificing the standard expected on a modern support yacht. Crew areas are designed for long rotations, while guest spaces remain suitable for owners or expedition teams traveling with the motor yacht.

As onboard programs become more ambitious, the support yacht has moved from a niche concept to a practical component of many large yacht fleets. The YS53 sits at the center of this shift, providing the space, equipment, and operational backing required to extend time on the water well beyond the limits of a single vessel.

Larger platforms in the Damen Yacht Support range

According to YachtBuyer MarketWatch, the largest yacht database in the world, Damen Yachting’s Yacht Support series extends into larger, more capable territory with the YS65 and flagship YS75. At 65.1m, the Damen YS 65 introduces greater onboard volume and expanded guest accommodation, hosting up to 12 guests across six cabins, while maintaining a strong focus on expedition use with a 5,000nm range. Its design centers on multipurpose capability, with generous deck space for tenders and toys, alongside the option for a fully enclosed helicopter hangar integrated into the helideck.

At the top of the range, the 75m Damen YS 75 shifts further toward operational scale. With capacity for up to 31 crew and extensive storage for submersibles, vehicles, and specialist equipment, it functions as a high-capacity logistical platform. Guest accommodation is more limited, reflecting its primary role as a working vessel within a larger yacht program.
