Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement ice class steel hull and superstructure she features a 13.2m beam and a 6.25m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 2,407 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in mid 1973. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in April 1974 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in November 1974.

Exterior Design

Aqua Lares still carries much of the shape of the Class I icebreaker she started life as. The high bow, long working foredeck and compact bridge structure remain obvious, while the conversion work has been concentrated farther aft around guest decks, aviation and water access.

A commercial helideck occupies the owner’s deck aft and was designed around an EC135, with an eight-tonne aviation fuel tank and dedicated fire-fighting systems. A smaller emergency helicopter could also be carried forward, with crane handling and storage provision for its rotor blades.

The foredeck has been used heavily for expedition equipment, including snowmobiles and a three-person U-Boat Worx C-Explorer submarine. Tender handling is spread through the middle of the yacht, where the arrangement shows two substantial boats carried inboard between the guest areas.

Aft, the conversion added much broader guest decks than the original working ship would ever have carried. The owner’s deck finishes in the helipad, the boat deck has a large open lounge aft and the main deck ends around the pool and outdoor dining area. Despite all that work, the original hull still dominates the profile, which is exactly what gives Aqua Lares her slightly unusual character among converted explorers.

Legend is a vessel forged in the rigors of maritime utility, expertly repurposed to navigate the world's most uncharted waters with a complement of luxury amenities.

Interior Design

The interior has a much richer, more traditional feel than the exterior suggests, with dark timber, patterned fabrics and individually styled rooms instead of one finish carried throughout the yacht.

The main saloon combines lounging and formal dining, while a separate whisky and cigar room sits farther forward. Dark wood panelling, striped upholstery and a compass motif on the floor give that room a club-like feel, and the nearby cinema seats 14.

Wellness spaces sit lower in the yacht, including a Balinese-style spa with a central pool, sauna and treatment rooms. The gym is positioned higher up, where it gets better natural light and sits closer to the main guest areas.

The layout is unusually spread out because of the yacht’s original ship architecture. Large central circulation spaces and long passageways connect rooms that would normally sit more tightly together on a purpose-built yacht, while the conversion has used that volume to create plenty of separation between social areas, guest cabins and expedition spaces.

Accommodation

Aqua Lares accommodates up to 26 guests in 13 ensuite cabins, a large complement for a private-style explorer yacht.

The cabins were individually themed around different cities. The two VIP suites include Moscow, finished in darker timber and red tones, and New York, which takes more of an Art Deco approach.

The owner’s suite, Paris, is larger and calmer in character, with a central bed, sitting area and substantial bathroom. The neighbouring Amsterdam cabin can connect directly with it, giving the owner’s accommodation a useful extra room when required.

Crew accommodation is arranged across several decks, with space for 19 regular crew and a further 10 expedition staff. The captain and ice pilot are both housed close to the wheelhouse.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Smit-Bolnes (308HDK) 8-cylinder 3,400hp engines running at 375rpm, motor yacht Aqua Lares is capable of reaching a top speed of 17 knots, and comfortably cruises at 14 knots. With her 466,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 18,426 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Leisure & Entertainment

Guest facilities include the Balinese spa, sauna, massage rooms, gym, 14-seat cinema, beauty salon and deck jacuzzi. The main deck aft also incorporates a pool, while the yacht carries a substantial collection of expedition equipment alongside her tenders, helicopter and submarine.

Special Features

She carries two 12m sport fishing boats, as well as the usual range of smaller tenders.
