The 18m yacht has entered the water at the company's shipyard in Stralsund, Germany, and will now begin an extensive sea trial program ahead of her world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026.
Designed by Italian studio Cossutti & Ganz with interiors by Micheletti + Partners, the PY60 has been developed from the outset as a solar-electric cruising platform rather than adapting an existing motor yacht to electric propulsion. The first hull will also serve as Pioneer Yachts' long-term development vessel, gathering operational data that will help shape future production models.
First Hull Enters Testing Phase
The launch represents a major step for Pioneer Yachts, a company founded just two years ago with the aim of developing practical solar-electric cruising yachts for extended time on the water.
Rather than delivering the first yacht directly to an owner, founder Mike Frank intends to operate Pioneer One himself throughout the sea trial and commissioning process. According to the company, the yacht will be used under everyday cruising conditions to validate its systems while collecting real-world performance data for future refinement.
This isn't another electric catamaran. It's a completely new kind of yacht for this segment, built for real operation. I’m sure the sea trials ahead are where that gets proven."
- Pioneer Yachts Founder, Mike Frank
Following testing, Pioneer One is scheduled to make her first public appearance at the Cannes Yachting Festival, taking place from September 8-13.

A Platform Built for Solar Power
Unlike many electric yachts that retrofit battery propulsion into conventional platforms, the PY60 was conceived specifically around solar-electric operation. The catamaran integrates solar panels, battery storage, electric propulsion and diesel generators into a single energy management system intended to reduce dependence on shore power while supporting extended cruising.
Pioneer Yachts says the arrangement allows the motor yacht to operate entirely on solar-electric energy during typical cruising scenarios, with the generators providing additional flexibility when required. The builder also developed the hull form, weight distribution and superstructure specifically to improve energy efficiency rather than adapting an existing design.
Performance figures remain focused on cruising rather than outright speed, with a reported top speed of 11 knots and a cruising speed of 7.5 knots.
European Design Expertise Shapes the PY60
Although the PY60 places considerable emphasis on its propulsion technology, Pioneer Yachts has paired that engineering focus with established names from the European yacht industry.
Exterior styling and naval architecture were developed by Cossutti & Ganz, the Italian design studio known for its work on Bavaria Yachts sailing models and competitive racing yachts. Interior design comes from Micheletti + Partners, whose previous projects include work with Baltic Yachts and Nautor's Swan.
The result is approximately 250 square meters of accommodation and living space arranged across three decks, with layouts intended for extended stays aboard.
Instead of relying on high-voltage electrical architecture often associated with larger electric vessels, the yacht operates on a 48-volt electrical backbone designed to simplify maintenance while improving safety and long-term reliability. According to the builder, every major onboard system is integrated into a single monitored network, allowing owners to oversee energy generation, storage and consumption throughout the yacht.
Owner-Led Testing
Pioneer One will serve a dual role as both the company's flagship and its primary development platform. Rather than treating the first hull as a demonstration yacht, Frank plans to cruise extensively aboard the vessel after commissioning. Pioneer Yachts says operational feedback gathered during those voyages will feed directly into future improvements across the PY60 range.
The approach reflects the philosophy behind the company itself. Founded after Frank was unable to find a solar-electric cruising yacht suited to his own expectations for offshore use, Pioneer Yachts has focused on creating a platform intended for practical, long-range operation rather than short demonstration cruises.
With sea trials now underway, Cannes will provide the first opportunity for the wider industry to see whether that concept translates successfully from design drawings to real-world cruising.
