JFA Yachts Delivers Largest-Ever Hybrid 50m Explorer Yacht Canoa

French shipyard JFA Yachts has delivered the 50m hybrid explorer yacht Canoa, completing the largest and most technically advanced project in the company's history.

Launched at the builder's Concarneau facility in January 2026, the fully custom explorer has now been handed over following an extensive programme of harbour and sea trials. Developed alongside Humphreys Yacht Design, the yacht was commissioned for an owner seeking a capable long-range cruiser designed for extended family voyages.

JFA's Largest Project to Date

At 50.44 meters and with a gross tonnage of 498GT, Canoa becomes the largest yacht ever completed by JFA Yachts and introduces several engineering milestones for the French builder.

The explorer pairs an aluminium hull with an infused glass-epoxy composite upper superstructure - an uncommon solution on a yacht of this size. Reducing weight high above the waterline lowers the centre of gravity, improving stability, efficiency and onboard comfort without compromising structural strength.

Construction began in late 2021, with the project built to Lloyd's Register classification under the management of A2B Marine Projects. JFA Yachts President Frédéric Jaouen described the yacht as the result of several years of development focused on creating a genuine explorer capable of travelling long distances while reducing energy consumption through new technologies.

Hybrid Technology for Global Voyages

Rather than relying solely on conventional diesel propulsion, Canoa uses a parallel hybrid system pairing twin MTU 12V 2000 M72 engines with electric motors. The arrangement allows the yacht to operate quietly during manoeuvring, low-speed cruising and while at anchor, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

Supporting the propulsion package are a substantial battery bank, solar panels and a Dynamic Positioning System that enables the expedition yacht to maintain position without dropping anchor when conditions allow. Combined with her efficient fast-displacement hull, Canoa offers a cruising range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, giving her the capability to undertake extended passages between remote cruising destinations.

Built Around Exploration

Humphreys Yacht Design was responsible for both the naval architecture and exterior styling, creating a yacht that prioritises practicality, visibility and efficiency over decorative styling.

The fast-displacement hull was refined through extensive hydrodynamic testing to improve long-distance efficiency while retaining the ability to cruise at higher speeds when required. According to the shipyard, sea trials confirmed both the superyacht's predicted performance and the successful integration of its hybrid systems.

CANOA is the culmination of several years of development and research driven by a clear objective: to create a true exploration yacht capable of crossing the world's oceans in optimal conditions while reducing its environmental footprint through innovative engineering solutions."

The exterior follows a purposeful explorer profile, with long horizontal lines, generous freeboard and expansive glazing wrapping around the main, upper and bridge decks to provide panoramic visibility throughout the motor yacht.

Unlike many leisure-focused motor yachts, the stern is arranged as a dedicated working deck capable of carrying substantial expedition equipment. Three separate cranes handle operations onboard, including launching a 9.25-meter tender, rescue craft and personal watercraft, while the spacious aft deck provides additional storage for toys and expedition gear.

Also under construction at JFA Yachts is the Long Island 87, a new aluminium sailing catamaran developed for global cruising with an extended flybridge, solar panels and accommodation for up to 10 guests.
