Apsara is a multi-award winning 56.1m sail yacht for sale delivered by Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman in 2018. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Dykstra & Partners, while Mark Whiteley Design is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around an aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 9.5m beam and a 4.8m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 298 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in early 2018. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in November 2017 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in January 2018.

Exterior Design

Apsara was conceived as a modern interpretation of the classic sailing ketch, combining timeless proportions with contemporary naval architecture and sail handling systems. Her slender hull, raised stern and clean, uninterrupted deck give her the elegance of a traditional ocean-going yacht, while modern engineering beneath the surface delivers the performance and reliability expected of a 21st-century superyacht.

Dykstra Naval Architects developed the yacht around an owner's brief that called for long-range family cruising without compromising the ability to compete in events such as the St Barths Bucket Regatta. A fixed keel and balanced spade rudder provide responsive handling across a wide range of conditions, while the powerful ketch rig balances sail area between two masts to make the yacht easier to handle than an equivalent sloop of similar size.

The carbon fibre rig, built by Rondal, supports a Panamax mast height of 62.5m (205ft) and carries 1,390sqm of upwind sail area, increasing to around 3,000sqm downwind. Advanced sail handling systems simplify the management of this substantial sail plan, allowing a small crew to operate the yacht efficiently during both passagemaking and competitive sailing.

Keeping the deck free from visual clutter formed a central part of the design. Twin helm stations sit amidships behind the main deckhouse, preserving clear sightlines while maintaining an uncluttered teak deck. A second deckhouse aft is dedicated exclusively to the owner's suite below, providing privacy without interrupting the yacht's graceful profile. A fold-out boarding platform and a selection of tenders and watersports equipment further support extended cruising at anchor.

Interior Design

Mark Whiteley Design created an interior that balances traditional craftsmanship with a bright, contemporary atmosphere. Warm Cuban mahogany provides richness throughout the yacht, while ivory and cream fabrics, painted panels and generous glazing prevent the spaces from feeling overly formal. The result is a calm, understated interior inspired by New England beach houses rather than historic sailing yachts.

Large rectangular windows replace the small portholes traditionally associated with classic yachts, bringing significantly more daylight into the main saloon and dining areas. Modern details, including sliding bathroom doors, improve circulation and make more efficient use of the available volume without compromising the yacht's traditional character.

The owner's suite became one of the defining elements of the interior design. The mizzen mast passes through the centre of the cabin, where it is finished as a joinery feature beneath a large skylight that introduces natural light deep into the space. Alongside the sleeping area, the suite includes a study, generous ensuite bathroom and a private seating area with views out to sea.

Accommodation

Apsara accommodates up to eight guests in four ensuite cabins, together with accommodation for five crew.

The owner's suite occupies its own private area beneath the aft deckhouse on the main deck, creating a level of privacy rarely found aboard sailing yachts. In addition to the bedroom, the suite incorporates a dedicated study, lounge area and spacious ensuite bathroom, while the central mizzen mast becomes an architectural feature.

Guest accommodation comprises two double cabins forward and a twin cabin that can be converted into a four-berth arrangement when required. This flexible layout allows the yacht to adapt to family cruising while retaining the ability to host additional children or guests during extended voyages.

Performance & Capabilities

Apsara combines classic sailing aesthetics with advanced engineering developed for serious offshore cruising. Her carbon fibre Rondal rig, fixed keel and balanced spade rudder create an efficient sailing platform that remains responsive in lighter airs while offering the stability needed for long ocean passages.

When conditions require, a 996hp MTU diesel engine provides a top speed of 16 knots and a comfortable cruising speed of 10 knots. Fuel capacity of 90,850 litres gives the yacht a transoceanic range of approximately 4,000 nautical miles under power, supporting the owner's original brief for worldwide cruising alongside occasional regatta participation.

Amenities

The yacht features a well-equipped gym, allowing her guests to keep up their fitness regimes at sea.
