114m Lürssen Fuel-Cell Superyacht Project Cosmos Officially Launched

German shipyard Lürssen has launched the 114m superyacht Project Cosmos from its Rendsburg facility in Germany, introducing one of the most advanced vessels in its history.

Featuring methanol fuel-cell technology and a distinctive Marc Newson design, the six-deck yacht is built for global exploration, including operation in light ice conditions. Her delivery is scheduled for 2026.

Fuel-Cell Propulsion and Hybrid Capability

Cosmos is the first Lürssen yacht to feature fuel-cell technology, fitted with two 500kW methanol fuel cells at the request of her Japanese owner. This complex installation enables the yacht to cruise at up to 7 knots for 1,000 nautical miles, or remain at anchor for up to 15 days, with zero emissions. The system’s fuel cells are built from stacks of bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies, integrated with methanol supply, ventilation, and electrical infrastructure to meet strict maritime safety standards.

“While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – COSMOS is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”

As a prototype system, Cosmos retains conventional diesel generators, engines, and fuel tanks, allowing her to operate in traditional internal combustion mode when required.

Marc Newson’s Distinctive Exterior

Designed by Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, Cosmos departs from conventional superyacht styling with an explorer-inspired silhouette and extensive glazing. The most striking feature is a glass-domed owner’s study, perched high on the vessel and directly connected to a private sky terrace. The dome required a custom engineering process to bend thick glass panels with optical clarity, creating uninterrupted 360-degree views.

Other prominent glass elements include a continuous band of glazing wrapping the cabin deck, a bow observation lounge beneath the helipad, and an aft balcony with a glass balustrade.

Outdoor Living and Tender Operations

Aft, the main deck features a large swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, flanked by sunloungers and seating. Below this area lies a dry dock equipped with a sledge system for launching and retrieving the motor yacht's largest tender. The open layout prioritizes both guest leisure and operational functionality, with capacity for carrying substantial support craft without a separate shadow vessel.

Constructed with a steel hull and superstructure, Cosmos has an estimated gross tonnage of 6,300 GT and an 18-meter beam. She is Ice Class 1D certified, allowing safe navigation in light ice conditions and opening up destinations across all five major oceans and seven continents.

The yacht’s long-range capability is supported by her hybrid propulsion configuration, advanced fuel system, and robust engineering for remote cruising.

A Landmark Project for Lürssen

“This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary,” said Peter Lürssen, CEO of Lürssen. “While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history – Cosmos is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”

Marc Newson described the project as an “immensely creative” collaboration, noting that the owner’s involvement allowed the design team to explore every possibility from the yacht’s exterior profile to its smallest details.
