Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 6.43m beam and a 2.7m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 230 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Exterior Design
Amazone carries the long, elegant profile typical of large pre-war motor yachts, with an unbroken sheer line that runs cleanly from the stern to the fine, slightly raked bow. Built in steel by John I. Thornycroft in Southampton and launched in 1936, the yacht reflects the restrained styling and practical proportions of British yacht design from the period.
The hull uses a full displacement form designed for extended offshore cruising, while circular portholes, open deck rails and balanced superstructure levels maintain the yacht’s distinctly classic appearance.
Across her long history the yacht underwent several visual alterations, including modifications to the funnel, bridge extension work and enclosed side passages during the 1970s. More recent restoration preparation has removed much of the later superstructure, exposing the original hull and structural framework ahead of a planned rebuild at Pendennis in Falmouth.
Exterior spaces were arranged for entertaining as well as long-range cruising. The tri-deck layout includes broad exterior deck areas, a top deck sun lounge and Jacuzzi, while the yacht was also capable of hosting up to 60 guests for receptions and events.
Interior Design
The interior of Amazone follows the layout and atmosphere of a classic gentleman’s motor yacht, with formal entertaining spaces, private passageways and traditional compartmentalised rooms rather than modern open-plan layouts.
The main saloon includes a 40m² (431ft²) lounge area with integrated bar space, while a separate dining room and conference room support larger gatherings onboard. Original design details remain one of the yacht’s defining traits, including concealed doors hidden within imitation bookcase joinery and carefully separated owner and guest circulation routes.
Wood panelling, period cabinetry and traditional proportions define much of the interior character. Historical records describe the owner’s study as flexible space that could convert into an additional guest cabin if needed, while passageways and service areas were designed to support extended cruising with full crew operation.
Accommodation
Amazone offers accommodation for up to 12 guests across six cabins, alongside quarters for up to eight crew members.
The original lower deck arrangement included a large master cabin, five single guest cabins and one twin guest cabin, supported by three bathrooms. Over time the layout evolved to support larger guest groups while retaining many of the yacht’s traditional room arrangements and private circulation areas.
An owner’s study sits within the accommodation plan and was originally designed so it could convert into an extra stateroom when required. Crew accommodation, pantry areas, mess spaces and operational rooms remain separated from the guest zones to support formal onboard service and long-distance cruising.
Performance & Capabilities
Motor yacht Amazone is capable of reaching a top speed of 12 knots, and comfortably cruises at 11 knots. With her 18,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.
