How Changing Owner Expectations Are Reshaping Fully Custom Superyacht Construction

Changing owner expectations are reshaping fully custom superyacht construction. Speaking on HOFF Talks, Oceanco COO Erwin Kooistra discussed how owner collaboration and sustainability are influencing projects from concept to delivery.

Unlike semi-custom yacht programmes, every Oceanco project starts from a blank sheet of paper. Kooistra explained that builds typically span four to five years, with owners continuing to refine layouts and onboard spaces throughout construction. Oceanco's approach is designed to accommodate these changes, allowing each yacht to evolve alongside its owner.

Designing around the owner, not the platform

Building a fully custom superyacht means no two projects follow exactly the same path. Kooistra explained that owners frequently request changes throughout construction, whether that's reconfiguring accommodation, enlarging beach clubs or adapting operational spaces to better suit the way they intend to use the yacht. Every adjustment requires close collaboration between designers, engineers and specialist co-makers, with each decision carefully assessed to understand its wider impact on the project. Rather than asking owners to compromise, Oceanco's approach focuses on adapting the yacht around their individual requirements.

Established relationships are accelerating bespoke projects

Long-term owner relationships are becoming an increasingly valuable part of the custom yacht sector. Returning clients often have a clearer understanding of how they use their yachts, while builders benefit from an established working relationship that can streamline communication without limiting creativity.

A recent example is the 111m superyacht DreAMBoat, commissioned by a repeat Oceanco owner. Early discussions began in November 2021, with the contract signed in February 2022 before delivery followed in November 2025. For a fully custom yacht measuring 111 metres, it represents the shortest lead time in Oceanco's history and demonstrates how established trust can help accelerate development while maintaining the bespoke nature of the project.

Sustainability is becoming part of the owner's brief

Kooistra also highlighted changing attitudes towards sustainability, noting that younger owners are increasingly making environmental considerations part of the initial design brief. He pointed to the growing use of synthetic decking as one example, reducing maintenance requirements and allowing crew to spend more time supporting owners and guests. Looking ahead, he identified methanol as one of the most promising alternative fuels currently being explored for future superyachts as the industry continues to develop more sustainable propulsion solutions.

Collaboration is at the heart of Oceanco's approach

While technology continues to evolve, Kooistra suggested that collaboration remains the defining characteristic of successful custom yacht construction. Owners, designers, engineers and specialist suppliers all contribute throughout a project that can span several years, ensuring each yacht develops around the owner's changing lifestyle and priorities rather than a predefined specification.

That philosophy continues to shape Oceanco's newest projects as the shipyard responds to changing owner expectations while maintaining its focus on fully bespoke construction.

Oceanco continues to focus on fully custom superyachts

According to YachtBuyer MarketWatch, the largest yacht database in the world, Oceanco currently has two yachts in the order book. The Dutch shipyard continues to specialise in fully custom superyachts, with recent projects reflecting the owner-led philosophy discussed by Kooistra. Alongside DreAMBoat, another notable example is the 111m superyacht Leviathan, a bespoke project proudly ranked 54th in the YachtBuyer YB100, our exclusive list of the World's Biggest Yachts by Gross Tonnage, while also securing a place among the Top 100 Longest Yachts in 2025.
