On Deck

Boats like the Ranger Tugs R31 are still considered trailerable by many standards, but the R43 CB, with its wider beam and overall size, exceeds typical road limits. That’s why the R43 CB is described as the only Ranger Tug model that can’t be trailered - it has outgrown that category entirely. Starting aft, the oversized swim platform feels substantial and well-equipped, featuring a built-in swim ladder and clever rubber bumper fenders that resemble bumper car pads. There’s also a storage locker for two propane tanks, essential for the galley’s range and oven, plus access hatches for the bilge.

Dual transom doors lead into the covered cockpit, with symmetrical boarding access on both port and starboard sides. The dual entry gives the boat a bigger feel right away - more like a small motor yacht than a tug. The cockpit itself is highly versatile, fitted with removable tables, integrated cupholders, a Fusion stereo remote, and convertible seating for up to six. These cockpit tables swing and pivot into different arrangements, opening up the entire aft space for socializing, fishing, or simply relaxing. An opening glass pass-through window connects the cockpit to the galley, enhancing flow and functionality for entertaining.

Access to the 205sq/ft command bridge is via a staircase with a handrail. Up top, the flybridge offers wraparound seating for eight, lots of storage, an electric grill, sink, drinks fridge, and the remote for the davit crane. There’s even a custom option to rotate the helm bench to face the table - perfect for sharing a meal or cocktails with a full group.

The forward deck includes a surprising setup: two windlasses mounted laterally rather than fore-aft, each with its own redirect pulley for chain management. Foot switches and anchor locker access are on both sides, and there are fittings for a forward sunshade using adhesive snaps and 3M-style removable buttons. There's also a bow pulpit for dolphin watching and space to enjoy sundowners with a sea view.

Interior Accommodation

Immediately to port in the air-conditioned salon is the galley, equipped with a 3-burner propane range, full oven, dual sink setup, butcher block, extendable counter, microwave, and an abundance of refrigeration - including two fridge drawers and a large lower fridge. Thoughtful additions like a built-in spice rack, propane switch, and a conveniently placed water tank gauge support daily liveaboard use.

The salon features a comfortable settee facing a high-low dining table and pop-up TV. Overhead hatches open to the flybridge above, giving a neat pass-through opportunity for serving drinks or snacks. Large opening windows on both sides and playful portholes allow cross-ventilation and daylight, while subtle lighting and joinery add warmth. Storage has been maximized throughout, with deep drawers, pantries, and cubbies for dry goods or boat show supplies.

Just forward is a spacious dinette that converts into a third sleeping space thanks to the high-low table and fill-in cushions. Adjacent is a laundry area with separate washer and dryer units - a rarity at this size - plus even more refrigeration and freezer storage. This utility area can double as a secret retreat, complete with TV and overhead lighting.

At the lower helm, modern seats with armrests and electronic lift controls sit before an elegantly finished wood helm wheel and a full Garmin electronics suite. The helm station includes twin Garmin chart plotters, Volvo Penta displays, a joystick, dual throttle controls, trim tabs, VHF, search light, horn, and stereo, all within arm’s reach. There’s also wireless phone charging and direct access to fuse panels.

Owner's Cabin

The forward master stateroom feels open and light thanks to its clever companionway-style folding door and large windows on three sides, including forward-facing panes that allow for anchoring checks from the bed. There’s a switch-activated spotlight outside that lets you see the bridle or anchor chain at night without leaving your bunk.

On starboard, a small desk or vanity makes an ideal home office, complete with storage and a round porthole. There’s a settee with storage, drawers, and a full hanging locker. A wall-mounted TV, overhead hatches, and integrated lighting complete the space. The ensuite is a semi-dry head with a proper glass divider to contain shower spray. There's a full-size shower, good elbow room, integrated shelving, a mirrored cabinet, and a combination of frosted skylight and opening port for light and ventilation.

Guest Cabin

The aft guest cabin is unexpectedly spacious, with staggered ceiling height that provides decent headroom. Twin beds can be converted into a single oversized berth with an insert, and fitted cushions create a lounge-like vibe. There’s a cute sitting stool, ample daylight from two side windows and a drop-down TV for added comfort.

The ensuite guest head is compact but complete, with a wet head layout, medicine cabinet, overhead skylight and storage. While simple, it’s well-suited for weekenders or children, and finishes match the rest of the interior.

Performance

The R43 CB is powered by twin Volvo Penta D6 IPS 450s with joystick control. Thanks to the IPS setup, there’s no need for separate bow or stern thrusters. The boat includes a gyro stabilizer, which runs quietly and effectively reduces roll, even when stationary.

The engine room is accessed via three large hatches, including a motorized central section. It offers excellent standing room and layout, allowing easy servicing of filters, sea strainers, oil change system, and through-hulls. The setup includes dual fuel tanks, conveniently located fuel gauges, bilge pumps, battery banks for both engines, and a dedicated generator with remote control access.

In Summary

The Ranger Tugs R43 CB is a feature-rich, highly practical boat designed for couples and cruising families who value comfort and capability, offering genuine liveaboard potential in a manageable footprint. With twin IPS drives, advanced Garmin navigation, joystick docking, and gyro stabilization, it’s a confident, well-rounded performer that brings a touch of the unexpected to the trawler category.
