Design & Construction

Designed around an aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 8.8m beam and a 3.2m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 499 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in early 1994. She was delivered to her owners in April 1996.

Exterior Design

The 46m (150.9ft) Pioneer yacht, built by Palmer Johnson, presents a clear explorer profile shaped for long-range cruising. Her raked bow rises high above the waterline, so the hull maintains a dry forward deck while giving the yacht a strong, purposeful stance.

The navy blue hull contrasts with a white superstructure, and a fine white boot top sits above a red waterline stripe, which sharpens the visual break at sea level. Along the hull, a series of portholes runs low and clean, while the bridge is set high and forward with wide glazing for strong visibility. Twin masts and communication domes reinforce her expedition role rather than softening it.

Teak decks run throughout, so movement across all exterior areas feels consistent. The top sky deck is arranged with sun loungers and a bar, and this space steps down into a split-level sundeck that creates distinct zones without closing the layout. The upper deck adds a hot tub and an open area set aside for workouts or yoga, which suits extended time at anchor.

At the stern, a drop-down transom forms a swim platform, so boarding from tenders stays direct while also opening access to the lazarette. This space links through to the engine room and stores equipment needed for longer passages. Above, the boat deck carries two RIBs and a three-ton lift derrick, along with storage for additional gear.

Interior Design

Inside, the Palmer Johnson Pioneer yacht follows a practical approach, built around durability and long-term use. American cherry wood panels define most surfaces, and the timber is book-matched, so the grain flows in mirrored patterns across bulkheads and cabinetry. Oak-planked floors break up the darker tones and keep the spaces balanced.

The bridge acts as the operational centre of the Pioneer superyacht, fitted with twin Kelvin Hughes ARPA radars, an Anschutz gyro-compass and autopilot, a magnetic compass, and a True-chart plotter. Communication systems include Satcom and mobile capability. The forward-leaning bridge windows, fitted with wipers and Kent screens, maintain clear visibility in poor conditions. A U-shaped settee and teak table sit within the space, so planning and discussion happen alongside navigation.

On the main deck, the dining room seats up to twelve guests around a solid timber table. Large armoured-glass windows bring in light while maintaining protection at sea. Adjacent, the library introduces a quieter setting, finished in French walnut with built-in bookcases, a leather-topped desk, and a concealed bar. The layout supports reading, work, or private use away from the main social areas.

Across the yacht, materials remain consistent, with warm woods, neutral fabrics, and simple detailing, so the interior reads as cohesive and built for regular use rather than display.

Accommodation

The 46m Pioneer yacht accommodates up to ten guests across five cabins, arranged as three doubles and two twin staterooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The full-beam master suite forms the main private space on board, fitted with a king-sized bed, two walk-in wardrobes, and a separate study and library. This layout adds usable living space beyond the sleeping area, which suits extended cruising.

Two additional double cabins use queen-sized beds and follow the same material palette, with practical layouts and a classic-modern feel. The remaining twin cabins provide flexible guest accommodation, each with en-suite facilities.

Crew accommodation supports up to eight, so the yacht maintains full service capability during long passages and remote operations.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3508 DITA) 8-cylinder 819hp engines, motor yacht Pioneer is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 161,967 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 7,000 nautical miles at 10 knots.
