Alewijnse Joins Oceanco Group in Strategic Expansion Under Gabe Newell

Oceanco has announced that Dutch electrical systems integrator Alewijnse has officially joined the Oceanco Group, strengthening the shipyard’s technical expertise and expanding its reach across multiple maritime sectors.

The move follows the acquisition of Alewijnse by Oceanco’s new shareholder, Gabe Newell, founder of Valve Corporation and the private research initiative Inkfish.

Strengthening Technical Capabilities

With more than 135 years of heritage, Alewijnse is a leading specialist in electrical systems integration, providing solutions in automation, power management, and control systems. The company has worked alongside Oceanco since the 1990s, contributing to milestone projects including the 105m H3, the 86m Amore Vero, the 86m Vibrant Curiosity and Sunrays, and the 81m Alfa Nero.

The acquisition ensures Alewijnse will continue under its existing leadership and strategy while gaining the resources of the wider Oceanco Group, which already includes Lateral Naval Architects, Mercury Yacht Construction, and Aluship.

Shared Vision for Growth

Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout emphasized that the addition of Alewijnse will accelerate the Group’s ability to pioneer new solutions across maritime industries. “With Alewijnse joining the Group, we have the opportunity to develop new solutions and innovations that serve not only yachting, but also other maritime sectors,” he said.

Alewijnse CEO Gert Bravenboer highlighted the growing importance of electrical integration in modern yacht construction. “Electrical systems integration is at the heart of modern yachting and maritime operations, and as part of the Oceanco Group, we can build on our expertise and lead in a rapidly evolving sector,” he commented.

Background and Transition

Over the past seven years, Alewijnse has been guided by Strong Root Capital, which helped the company consolidate its position across yachting, naval and governmental, dredging, offshore, and industrial markets. Patrick Zanders, Partner at Strong Root Capital, noted that the new partnership places Alewijnse in capable hands: “We are proud that, with Oceanco and Gabe Newell, a new owner has been found who will continue to build on this. This is without a doubt the right step at the right time.”

Newell, who acquired Oceanco earlier this month, is known for his deep personal interest in the ocean and scientific research. His investment is seen as a signal of long-term commitment to expanding Oceanco’s capabilities while advancing maritime technology and sustainability.

The integration of Alewijnse into the Oceanco Group not only consolidates decades of collaboration between the two companies but also positions the shipyard to meet rising demand for advanced electrical and automation systems in superyacht construction. By uniting with Oceanco’s other technical partners, Alewijnse’s expertise will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of yachts.

Major Builds Underway: Leviathan and DreAMBoat

According to YachtBuyer Market Watch, the largest yacht database in the world, the Alewijnse acquisition comes as Oceanco nears delivery of two of its most significant projects to date.

The 111m Leviathan, Oceanco’s largest yacht by volume with a near gross tonnage of 5,000 GT, was launched earlier this month ahead of sea trials. With naval architecture by Lateral and interiors by Mark Berryman Design, Leviathan introduces a diesel-electric power system with battery storage, tri-fold beach club, and a distinctive grey-on-grey aesthetic highlighted by programmable LED lighting. Her layout places unusual emphasis on crew–guest interaction, underscoring Oceanco’s shift toward purposeful, human-centered design.

Close behind her in the build schedule is the 111m DreAMBoat (project name Y726), styled by Espen Øino with interiors also by Berryman. Due for delivery in 2026, DreAMBoat balances expansive entertainment spaces with a family-oriented interior, featuring a winter garden, cinema lounges, spa, gym, and an owner’s private deck with Jacuzzi. At 4,550 GT, she is set to rank among the largest yachts in Oceanco’s fleet and highlights the shipyard’s growing ability to deliver high-volume, lifestyle-focused vessels alongside its most technically advanced builds.

The addition of Alewijnse strengthens Oceanco’s position as a leader in complex, future-focused yacht construction. With major projects like Leviathan and DreAMBoat underway, the Group is set to leverage its expanded expertise on a global stage.
