Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 34'1" beam and a 11'11" draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 1,054 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Exterior Design
The Royal Yacht Dannebrog has a strikingly elegant silhouette that captures the heritage of early 20th-century naval design. Built at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen and launched in 1931, her hull is constructed of riveted steel on transverse frames, featuring a classic clipper bow and an elliptical stern that give her a graceful, balanced profile underway or at anchor. Measuring 78.4m (257.2ft) in length with a beam of 10.4m (34.1ft) and a draught of 3.9m (12.8ft), she is a substantial yet finely proportioned vessel.
The yacht’s exterior is painted in traditional white with gold accents on the bow scrollwork and warm teak brightwork throughout. A soft cream funnel and varnished masts rise above the decks, lending a timeless contrast to the hull. The deck layout follows a clear division of function: forward of the funnel lie the crew quarters, cargo spaces, and engine room, while the aft section houses the royal apartments. The covered quarterdeck aft serves as the primary reception area during state visits or port calls, often hosting formal ceremonies and gatherings. Every exterior detail, from the polished brass to the orderly rigging, reflects naval precision maintained by the Danish Navy crew.
Interior Design
The royal apartments onboard Dannebrog include the King’s study, a dining saloon, a lounge, and private bedrooms. These spaces are fitted with furnishings and decorative elements originally taken from the 1879 paddle steamer Dannebrog, the previous royal vessel, giving a sense of continuity between eras. The style is traditional and restrained, prioritising craftsmanship and comfort rather than ostentation.
The galley and service areas are arranged to efficiently support official functions and daily life aboard. The helm and bridge reflect the yacht’s naval command heritage, with practical instrumentation and a disciplined layout.
Accommodation
Accommodation aboard Dannebrog is divided between the royal section aft and the naval crew quarters forward. The royal apartment can, in principle, be reconfigured as a hospital area, a legacy of the yacht’s original dual role as a royal and auxiliary medical ship. The royal suite provides private studies, a lounge, dining space, and sleeping quarters for the monarch and consort.
The ship’s crew consists of nine officers, seven sergeants, two enlisted able seamen, and between thirty-six and thirty-nine naval conscripts. The officers typically serve for two to four years, while the conscripts join for a single summer after completing naval training in Frederikshavn. Their duties include helmsman and lookout shifts, guard service, and maintaining the extensive brasswork and decks that define the yacht’s immaculate presentation.
Performance & Capabilities
Motor yacht Dannebrog is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 13 knots. She has a maximum range of 4,146 nautical miles.
Special Features
The royal apartment in the stern can be converted for the use of patients should the yacht be required in her emergency role as a hospital ship.
