The move follows her August launch from Rendsburg, where the German yard detailed her propulsion system and distinctive Marc Newson exterior.
Project Cosmos was commissioned for a Japanese owner and carries both interior and exterior design by industrial designer Marc Newson, supported by Lürssen’s in-house engineering team. Naval architecture is handled by the yard. Delivery is set for 2026.
A Fuel-Cell Milestone for Lürssen
Project Cosmos is the first Lürssen yacht to integrate methanol fuel-cell technology, fitted with two 500kW cells requested by her owner. As a prototype installation, the system enables slow-speed cruising at up to 7 knots for around 1,000 nautical miles or zero-emissions hotel mode for as long as 15 days at anchor.
Some yachts leave an indelible mark on our history, and Cosmos is one of them.”

To meet maritime safety standards, the fuel cells rely on stacks of bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies, tied into a dedicated methanol supply, ventilation, and electrical network. Conventional diesel engines, generators, and tanks remain on board to ensure full hybrid capability.
Marc Newson’s Distinctive Profile
Newson’s exterior introduces a profile shaped around large, uninterrupted glass surfaces and an explorer-leaning stance. The most recognisable feature is a glass-domed owner’s study positioned high on the superstructure and linked to a private sky terrace. Lürssen developed a bespoke process to bend thick glass sections with optical precision, producing a clear, continuous 360-degree panorama.
The emphasis on glass continues across the cabin deck, where a full band of glazing wraps the level for open outward views. Beneath the foredeck helipad sits a glass-encased observation lounge, while a wide aft balcony with a glass balustrade overlooks the main deck on the motor yacht.
Newson described the project as the result of close collaboration with “an immensely creative client,” adding that the process supported an organic progression across both form and detail.
Six Decks Geared for Global Cruising
Across her six decks, Project Cosmos is arranged for long-range use and remote destinations. Her aft main deck centers around a swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, bordered by seating and sunloungers. Below this area is a dry dock fitted with a sledge system for launching and retrieving her largest tender, removing the need for a separate support vessel.
The yacht carries an estimated gross tonnage of 6,300GT with an 18-meter beam. Her Ice Class 1D rating permits navigation in light ice conditions, extending her operational reach across all major oceans and polar regions.
Major Lürssen Builds Nearing Launch and Delivery
According to YachtBuyer Market Watch, the largest yacht database in the world, Lurssen currently has 12 yachts either in build or on order.
Launched in October 2025 and scheduled for delivery in 2027, Project Defy is constructed in steel and aluminium with a projected 10,500GT volume. This internal volume places her firmly in the YachtBuyer YB100 - our ranking of the world's biggest yachts by the true measurement of gross tonnage. Her exterior introduces long horizontal lines, a raised sculpted window element, and five wide aft terraces stacked down to a full beach club and pool. A helipad sits forward, with continuous deck glazing tying the profile together.
The 116-meter Project 13797 is expected to launch in December 2025 ahead of her 2026 delivery. Built around a displacement steel hull and a 17-meter beam, she carries an estimated 5,350GT volume, with Lürssen handling the naval architecture and shaping a layout that supports large tender storage, wellness areas, and a helipad. The 78-meter Odisea rounds out the group with a five-deck profile, teak-lined outdoor spaces, a low swim platform, and multiple pools, including a main-deck design with submerged stools that point to a swim-up bar concept. Glass balustrades and open deck arrangements reinforce her emphasis on outdoor living.
Project Cosmos now moves through trials as one of the most ambitious builds in Lürssen’s recent history, bringing its methanol fuel-cell system closer to real-world operation. As she advances toward her 2026 delivery, the yacht underscores the scale and technical direction shaping the shipyard’s wider fleet.
