Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 7.43m beam and a 2.74m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 206 GT (Gross Tonnes).

This was the sixth yacht built on the Darwin 86 design. Launched in December 2023 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was completed at Cantiere delle Marche's Cantiere delle Marche yard in Italy where she was commissioned and delivered to her owners in June 2024.

Exterior Design

Empire is a 26.03m (85.4ft) Darwin 86 explorer yacht built by Cantiere delle Marche and designed by Hydro Tec. She belongs to CdM’s long-running Darwin Class, a range known for compact, sturdy explorer yachts with serious passagemaking ability.

The profile has the purposeful look of a small expedition vessel, with a high bow, raised pilothouse and practical upper deck arrangement. The white superstructure contrasts with a bold blue hull graphic that runs up through the bow and across the forward topsides, giving Empire a more distinctive look than many traditional explorer yachts of this size.

The hull and superstructure proportions are workmanlike rather than sleek, but that suits the brief. Empire was designed for long voyages, including high-latitude cruising, and her build includes an ice belt at the waterline plus reinforced hull and rudders for icy conditions. The owner also specified bulletproof steel plates in parts of the hull, an unusual feature that reflects the yacht’s intended use in remote cruising areas.

Exterior spaces are practical and well distributed. The main deck combines indoor and outdoor social areas, while the upper deck opens onto a furnished aft terrace. The sundeck is fitted with loose furniture and sunbeds, creating an open-air area for relaxed time at anchor.

Technical capability is a major part of the design. Empire has a fourth pilot station in the engine room, which also functions as a panic-room-style control point. She is also fitted with an advanced anti-intrusion system.

Interior Design

Empire’s interior was designed by Alessandro Massari to the owner’s brief. The style is warm, sober and informal, with a mix of custom-made furniture and pieces from Poltrona Frau and Poliform.

The main deck forms the core of the yacht’s social life, with lounge and dining areas supported by a cozy bar and a well-equipped galley. The atmosphere is understated rather than showy, matching the yacht’s practical explorer identity.

The upper deck has a spacious gym, but the same area also works as a relaxed lounge that opens onto the furnished aft terrace. This gives Empire a useful all-weather social space with direct access to the outside.

The wheelhouse uses Boening integrated monitoring and control systems. Noise and vibration tests recorded very low levels, with noise below 40dB(A), supporting comfort in both guest and social areas.

Accommodation

Empire accommodates eight guests, with two extra Pullman berths available, across four cabins.

The full-beam owner’s stateroom is amidships on the lower deck. Two twin cabins sit nearby, each with a Pullman berth for added flexibility. A VIP suite is positioned forward on the lower deck.

Crew accommodation is forward on the main deck, with two cabins for four crew and a sizeable crew mess. A dedicated staircase links the crew area directly to the upper deck wheelhouse, which helps service and operations stay separate from guest spaces.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Scania (DI13070M) 394hp engines running at 1800rpm, motor yacht Empire is capable of reaching a top speed of 11 knots, and comfortably cruises at 10 knots. With her 38,390 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots.
