31m Darwin 102 Motor Yacht Haze² Marks CdM’s Third Launch in 30 Days

Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has officially launched the 31m expedition yacht Haze², marking the shipyard’s third delivery in just 30 days.

Haze² is the fifth Cantiere delle Marche Darwin 102 launched by CdM, part of a steel-hulled series known for 5,000-nautical-mile range, deep rounded hull sections, and high interior volume for extended cruising without compromise.

Shaped by an Experienced Yachtsman’s Brief

The British owner of Haze² was introduced to the Darwin range at the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival while touring a Darwin 106. The yacht’s engineering, build quality, and notably voluminous hull left a strong impression. This led to a close design collaboration with CdM in the months that followed, supported by Andrew Bond of Fraser Yachts.

A seasoned sailor with both sailing and motor yachts in his past, the Owner had a clear vision of what his next yacht should be.”

Described as a seasoned yachtsman with experience in both sail and motor yachts, the owner had a clear vision for his next vessel. Among the custom features on Haze² are a redesigned wheelhouse windscreen that improves forward visibility and alters the overall profile of the yacht, and a concealed tender crane set aft on the sundeck - a solution borrowed from CdM’s RJ series.

The hull design and naval architecture of the yacht remain the work of Sergio Cutolo and Hydro Tec, who have shaped the Darwin series from the beginning. On Haze², their trademark robust lines are enhanced by a bold exterior color scheme: a metallic grey hull with a contrasting blue superstructure.

Contemporary Interior by Lawson Robb

The interior of Haze² was developed by London-based studio Lawson Robb, working from a minimalist brief centered on tactile materials and soft natural tones. The owner of the motor yacht requested a palette of open-grain veneers, brushed bronze, leather, and mosaic detailing, favoring a low-gloss, contemporary aesthetic.

The result is a calm yet characterful interior, with layered textures and flowing lines that soften the substantial volumes of the superyacht. Indirect lighting and custom fixtures echo the architectural language, while restrained use of color allows for moments of vibrancy without overwhelming the space. Furniture is kept clean-lined and structured, lending a modern precision that balances the richness of the materials.

Accommodation is laid out for the owner, up to 10 guests, and six crew, allowing for both private use and charter. The yacht will be classed accordingly for commercial operation.

A Compact Explorer with Global Range

The Darwin Class has been a defining series for CdM since its debut in 2010, carving out a niche for sturdy steel-hulled explorer yachts under 40 meters that prioritize range, space, and autonomy. “We are immensely proud of the Darwin Class, a cornerstone of our shipyard,” said Ennio Cecchini, co-founder and President of CdM. “Its commercial success has far surpassed our expectations.”

With a displacement of 250 tons and a gross tonnage of 245GT, Haze2 maintains the series’ trademark full-bodied hull and generous fuel and storage capacities. Powered by twin Caterpillar C18 Acert engines (500kW each) and holding 40,000 liters of fuel, she is designed for extended self-sufficiency, capable of covering over 5,000 nautical miles at 9 knots without refueling.

The Darwin Class Today: Positioning the 102

With Haze², the Darwin 102 sits at the heart of Cantiere delle Marche’s current Darwin Class range, positioned between the Darwin 86 and Darwin 115. Each model shares the same steel hull construction, ocean-going range, and full-displacement capability, but targets a different type of cruising program.

The Cantiere delle Marche Darwin 86 is the smallest at 26.07 meters, offering four cabins for up to eight guests and a 4,000-nautical-mile range. It’s ideal for experienced owner-operators seeking serious capability in a more compact footprint. All Darwin 86 units built to date have been tailored to individual owners.

At 30.8 meters, the Cantiere Delle Marche Darwin 102 expedition yacht increases interior volume, guest capacity (up to 10), and crew quarters, making it better suited to longer itineraries or charter. It retains long-range credentials while allowing for custom features like those seen on Haze², including a revised wheelhouse and integrated crane.

The Cantiere delle Marche Darwin 115 stretches to 35 meters with a wider beam of 8.2 meters, creating space for larger communal areas, refined crew layout, and a 5,000-nautical-mile range. Positioned as the flagship, it also incorporates enhanced systems for efficiency and sustainability.

CdM’s latest launch reflects growing demand for capable, owner-driven explorers like the Darwin 102, backed by a shipyard delivering at pace and currently managing 18 yachts in their order book, according to YachtBuyer Market Watch - the world's largest yacht database.
