Delivered in 2021, Ziggy is a 35.6m motor yacht built by American shipyard Ocean Alexander. Her interior design and exterior styling comes from the drawing boards of Evan K Marshall, while Arrabito Naval Architects is responsible for her naval architecture.

Design & Construction

Designed around a semi-displacement GRP hull and superstructure she features a 7.64m beam and a 2.11m draft. The yacht is built over 2 decks with an internal volume of 199 GT (Gross Tonnes).

This was the first yacht built on the 35R design. She was completed at Ocean Alexander's Kaohsiung yard in Taiwan where she was commissioned and delivered to her owners.

Exterior Design

Ziggy is hull number one of the Ocean Alexander 35R, and her exterior introduced the full-scale version of the yard's Revolution idea: a near-vertical bow, a lot of beam carried forward and huge areas of glass rather than the narrower bow and stepped superstructure of an older-style motor yacht. Evan K. Marshall designed the exterior, with naval architecture by Arrabito Naval Architects.

The fuller bow does more than give Ziggy her distinctive shape. Carrying the hull volume forward creates room for a large main-deck owner's suite and a substantial foredeck lounge, while the wave-piercing treatment was developed to reduce spray from what might otherwise be a wet, bluff bow.

The stern was heavily influenced by how Ziggy's owners actually cruise. Rather than the solid hydraulic transom originally proposed for the 35R, they asked for sliding glass doors across the beach club because they spend time in colder parts of the US East Coast. The beach club therefore remains bright and connected with the water even when it is too cold to leave the stern completely open. Hull #2 used the folding transom arrangement instead, making this one of the clearest visual differences between Ziggy and later sisters.

Above the beach club, a curved glass skylight is set into the raised aft lounge. Guests sitting there can see directly into the space below, linking two decks that would otherwise feel quite separate. The beach club itself includes an exercise area, sauna and bathroom with shower, all opening towards the large swim platform.

The upper decks continue the same emphasis on usable space. Ziggy has an enclosed skylounge rather than relying entirely on an exposed upper helm, with a large bar and access to the aft deck, while the sundeck above adds another open-air level. The broad walkaround side decks were also specifically appreciated by the owners during their first season aboard.

Interior Design

Ziggy's interior is also by Evan K. Marshall, but this first 35R is much more individual than simply taking a standard Ocean Alexander scheme.

The basic architecture is light and open, with large areas of sole-to-ceiling glass and freestanding furniture rather than heavy built-in seating. In the main saloon, one pane of glass extends around 3m (10ft) from floor to ceiling, helping a yacht under 36m feel much less enclosed than the amount of internal volume might suggest.

Materials are richer than the pale overall appearance first suggests. Mahogany bulkheads sit alongside high-gloss ebony furniture fronts and lacquer, while leather-wrapped panels introduce patterns inspired by Piet Mondrian. Stone and lacquer are used for countertops, and some furniture uses stone carried down over the sides in a waterfall treatment.

One detail was developed specifically for Ziggy. A wave motif cut into composite material separates the saloon and dining area through a central sideboard, then reappears on doors, furniture and wall panels throughout the yacht. Marshall had included the pattern in the original renderings shown to the owners, and they liked it enough to carry it into the finished interior.

Ziggy also takes the more social approach to the galley. Pocket doors lead from the saloon into a country-kitchen arrangement with a breakfast dinette, allowing guests to sit with the chef rather than hiding the galley entirely behind the service areas. The owners went further with the specification, choosing their preferred appliances and replacing the standard stainless sinks with composite granite versions similar to those they use at home.

There is plenty of less obvious owner input too. Safe storage for around 100 wine glasses is distributed across several decks, reducing the amount of glassware crew need to carry between levels when entertaining.

Accommodation

Ziggy accommodates ten guests in five en suite cabins, with accommodation for up to five crew.

The owner's suite occupies the forward main deck, using the volume created by the broad bow rather than pushing the master down beside the machinery. Large windows run along the sides, while the suite includes substantial wardrobe space and a particularly bright bathroom with a skylight above the bath. Glass-fronted display cases within the wardrobes provide dedicated storage for jewellery and watches rather than conventional drawers.

The owner also asked for a separate washer and dryer beside the master suite. It is a wonderfully practical custom detail, particularly on a yacht designed for months of family cruising rather than short stays aboard.

Four guest cabins occupy the lower deck. Two are twins with beds designed to slide together into doubles without first removing the central bedside table, another small detail that makes switching between family and adult guests much easier.

Crew circulation received similar attention. A concealed door links the crew area directly with the lower guest foyer, allowing service between the accommodation areas without forcing crew to make a much longer trip through the main guest spaces.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel MAN (V12-1900) 1,900hp engines running at 2300rpm, motor yacht Ziggy is capable of reaching a top speed of 31 knots, and comfortably cruises at 27 knots. Her semi-displacement hull design means she offers a great balance of space and speed.
