Founded in Stralsund on Germany’s Baltic coast by engineer and energy entrepreneur Mike Frank, the company positions itself around practical long-range electric cruising, with a focus on operational reliability and real-world usability rather than experimental concepts.
A new German player enters electric yachting
Pioneer Yachts was established after Frank struggled to find a solar-electric yacht that met his own expectations for dependable offshore use. Rather than adapting an existing platform, he assembled a team of engineers to develop a dedicated solar-electric system from the ground up.
The company draws heavily from Frank’s background in the energy sector. He founded the meistro Energie group two decades ago, building one of Germany’s early providers of direct CO₂-free energy generated through proprietary photovoltaic parks.
With Frank applying the same principles to the maritime sector as he does elsewhere, Pioneer Yachts’ boats offer clear system architecture, measurable performance, and continuous refinement through use."

That technical and systems-led approach now shapes Pioneer Yachts’ marine projects. According to the company, its motor yachts are designed around measurable efficiency, straightforward system architecture, and continuous operational refinement through real-world use. Pioneer Yachts is based in Stralsund, part of Germany’s established Baltic maritime region, with all engineering and construction carried out domestically.
Inside the solar-electric PY60
The first yacht model to emerge from the new builder is the PY60, a 60-foot solar-electric catamaran developed for long-range independence on the water.
Exterior design and naval architecture come from Italian studio Cossutti & Ganz, while interiors are by Micheletti + Partners. The model pairs European styling with a propulsion setup centered entirely around solar-electric operation.
The yacht is fitted with solar panels integrated into the platform alongside electric propulsion systems designed for continuous cruising without reliance on conventional fuel-powered operation. Pioneer Yachts states the PY60 is capable of a top speed of 11 knots, with a cruising speed of 7.5 knots.
Rather than focusing on short demonstration runs or marina-based operation, the company says the PY60 has been developed specifically for extended time at sea, with onboard systems engineered around energy independence and predictable long-distance performance.
A hands-on approach from the founder
The first hull, named Pioneer One, is scheduled to launch this summer ahead of its public debut at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival, taking place from September 8-13. Importantly, the first yacht will not serve solely as a showcase model. Frank himself plans to operate the vessel extensively, using it as an active test platform to gather operational data under everyday cruising conditions.
In short, future units will be built for real use. This is our top priority as a company."

That information will then feed directly into future development of the PY60 series and any later Pioneer Yachts models. “As I am operating the first unit myself, this will serve as our key reference point,” said Frank. “We will monitor the operations under real conditions, and this essential data can inform further development.”
Electric propulsion gains momentum in yachting
The launch of Pioneer Yachts arrives as more builders begin exploring hybrid and electric propulsion in both the sailing and motor yacht sectors. Fully solar-electric cruising platforms capable of longer autonomous operation, however, remain relatively rare within the production market.
Rather than presenting the concept as a luxury experiment, Pioneer Yachts appears to be targeting owners seeking quieter operation, lower system complexity, and greater onboard independence during extended cruising.
With Pioneer One expected to make its first public appearance in Cannes later this year, the debut will offer one of the clearest early indicators of how viable fully solar-electric cruising catamarans may become within the wider yacht market.
