Aspen Alternative is a 49.9m motor yacht delivered by American shipyard Trinity Yachts in 2010. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Trinity Yachts, while Evan K Marshall is responsible for her interior design.

Design & Construction

Designed around a displacement aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 8.53m beam and a 2.34m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 459 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

Stefano Righini designed Aspen Alternative during a period when Trinity Yachts was building some of America's largest privately owned superyachts, and her profile captures the yard's approach well. The 50m (164ft) aluminium hull carries a long foredeck, raised pilothouse and gently rising sheer that keep the yacht visually low despite her volume. Dark glazing forms continuous bands through the superstructure, while large saloon windows reduce the amount of solid white structure and bring far more daylight into the interior than many American yachts of the same period.

Aspen Alternative found a second life on screen in 2018 when she was cast as Birthday Present in the remake of Overboard, starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. Production designer Brent Thomas searched internationally before choosing the Trinity yacht, explaining that her restrained styling and classic proportions suited the remake's cleaner visual direction. Her exterior decks and main saloon appear throughout the film, while the remaining interiors were recreated on sound stages in Vancouver. The production also pays tribute to the original 1987 film starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, whose fictional yacht S.S. Immaculata was portrayed by the 40m (131.2ft) Kong & Halvorsen yacht Yecats, later renamed Attessa and then Huntress.

The deck layout follows the established tri-deck arrangement that made yachts of this size popular with both private owners and charter guests. The main aft deck provides a sheltered lounge close to the water, while the bridge deck adds a second outdoor seating and dining area connected directly to the skylounge. Above, the sundeck combines a Jacuzzi, wet bar, dining table and sun loungers beneath removable shade. A hydraulic swim platform and tender garage complete the stern, creating straightforward access to the water without compromising the yacht's clean aft profile.

Interior Design

Aspen Alternative's interior follows a more traditional American style than many contemporary European yachts. High-gloss American cherry joinery, cream carpets and carefully detailed cabinetry create a bright, understated finish that relies on craftsmanship rather than fashion. Large windows along the main deck prevent the darker timber from dominating the living spaces, while the layout gives each room a clear purpose instead of relying on one large open-plan saloon.

The main saloon provides generous seating around the panoramic windows before leading into a formal dining room for ten guests. On the bridge deck, the skylounge introduces a more relaxed setting with a U-shaped bar, two separate seating areas and an entertainment centre, allowing guests to spread naturally across the yacht during longer cruises.

Although much of Overboard's interior was recreated in a film studio, Aspen Alternative's styling directly influenced the production. Brent Thomas cited the yacht's sapele woodwork, restrained detailing and classic proportions as key reasons for selecting her, while the elaborate walk-in wardrobe built for the film deliberately referenced Goldie Hawn's famous cedar closet scene from the 1987 original.

Accommodation

Aspen Alternative accommodates up to 10 guests in five cabins, with the owner's suite occupying the prime position on the main deck. The full-beam cabin includes a private study, sitting area, vanity, twin walk-in wardrobes and a large marble bathroom with a full-size bath. Wide forward-facing windows draw natural light into the suite while giving clear views ahead.

Four ensuite guest cabins occupy the lower deck, comprising three doubles and one twin. Two full-size guest suites sit aft, while the remaining cabins lie forward, creating a balanced arrangement that works equally well for family cruising and charter. The layout gives every guest cabin generous proportions without sacrificing circulation through the lower deck.

Separate accommodation for up to 10 crew allows guest and service routes to remain largely independent, supporting efficient operation during extended cruises or charter programmes.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512B) 2,250hp engines, motor yacht Aspen Alternative is capable of reaching a top speed of 20 knots, and comfortably cruises at 18 knots. With her 65,653 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles at 16 knots. She has been fitted with stabilizers to increase on-board comfort when the yacht is at anchor, particularly in rough waters.

Amenities

A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Aspen Alternative also features a deck jacuzzi for cooling off.
