TYKUN H1 Hydrogen-Powered Dayboat Unveiled with Fast Refueling Capability

TYKUN has released full technical details of the TYKUN H1, a 12m hydrogen-powered dayboat designed to deliver electric cruising with extended autonomy and fast refueling.

Developed with TESYA Group, the H1 uses a type-approved hydrogen fuel cell system derived from the technology used on the hydrogen chase boats at the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona. Designed for practical use rather than experimentation, the H1 dayboat delivers all-electric cruising at speeds up to 35 knots with a range of up to 60 nautical miles.

Rather than relying solely on battery capacity, the TYKUN H1 uses hydrogen as a range extender, providing full-day autonomy while avoiding long recharging downtime. The system is supported by NatPower H’s expanding hydrogen refueling network, positioning the H1 as one of the most production-ready hydrogen dayboats currently available.

Full-day electric cruising with fast refueling

At its core, the TYKUN H1 is an electric boat. Electric motors are powered by a battery bank, while a gaseous hydrogen fuel cell recharges the batteries during operation. This setup delivers the quiet, responsive characteristics of electric propulsion while addressing two of its key limitations: range and recharging time.

The fuel cell enables a practical operating range of 50 to 60 nautical miles, with a cruising speed of around 20 knots and a maximum speed of up to 35 knots. Hydrogen refueling takes less than three minutes, significantly reducing downtime compared to battery-only charging. A conventional shorepower connection is also fitted, allowing the H1 to operate purely as a high-performance electric tender when hydrogen access is limited.

Race-proven hydrogen systems refined for private use

The hydrogen system of the yacht was developed in collaboration with TESYA Group, drawing directly on its experience producing hydrogen-powered foiling chase boats for the most recent America’s Cup. While those projects demanded extreme performance, the TYKUN H1 focused on usability, reliability, and safety for private ownership.

TESYA reworked the propulsion architecture of the motor yacht to reduce system complexity and streamline operation, resulting in a setup intended to be managed without specialist intervention. The aim was to transfer proven hydrogen technology into a platform that could function reliably in everyday marina and dayboat use, rather than as a demonstration project.

The work we did with MED Group on the H1 was all about building a hydrogen boat that could be used by everyone.”

Safety engineering was a central design priority for the TYKUN H1. The hydrogen tanks, fuel cell, and battery bank are all type-approved by leading classification societies, providing a certified framework for onboard hydrogen use.

Design integration without visual compromise

The exterior design of the TYKUN H1 was developed by Tommaso Spadolini in collaboration with MED Group’s naval architecture team. The brief focused on integrating the hydrogen system without disrupting the boat’s proportions, deck layout, or storage capacity.

Despite the addition of hydrogen tanks, batteries, and fuel cell compartments, the deck height was raised by only 10 centimeters. Ventilation intakes were integrated into the T-top supports, and forward storage was retained. Built in aluminum, the H1 offers layout flexibility and customization, supporting use both as a superyacht tender and as a standalone dayboat.

Supported by an expanding hydrogen network

To support real-world operation, the TYKUN H1 is backed by NatPower H, which is developing hydrogen refueling infrastructure for ports and marinas. The company currently operates around 40 hydrogen refueling points and also provides mobile refueling services, reducing reliance on fixed marina installations during early adoption.

NatPower H works exclusively with gaseous hydrogen, aligning directly with the H1’s onboard storage and fuel cell configuration. This partnership strengthens the H1’s viability beyond controlled test environments, addressing one of the key challenges facing hydrogen-powered vessels.

The TYKUN H1 received early industry recognition at the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show, winning the Tenders and Water Toys category at the inaugural Blue Wake Awards, overseen by the Water Revolution Foundation.

With engineering complete, MED Group is ready to begin construction. The first prototype is expected to take approximately 8 to 10 months to build. Once series production is underway, delivery timelines are estimated at 6 to 8 months, depending on customization requirements.
