Afterglow is a 38.4m motor yacht for sale delivered by Christensen in 1992. The yacht's exteriors have been penned by Glade Johnson Design, while Sylvia Bolton Designs has designed her interiors.

Key Features

  • Brazilian honey teak joinery
  • Twin tender lifting cranes
  • Main-deck master suite
  • Transatlantic cruising capability

Design & Construction

Designed around a semi-displacement composite hull and superstructure she features a 7.9m beam and a 2.1m draft. The yacht is built over 2 decks with an internal volume of 165 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Exterior Design

The 38.4m (126ft) Christensen motor yacht AFTERGLOW carries the solid proportions and raised pilothouse profile typical of early 1990s American superyacht design, while the 2021 and 2022 exterior refit work has kept the yacht looking notably fresh. Built in fibreglass to a design by Glade Johnson and Apollonio, the yacht combines a broad 7.9m (25.9ft) beam with long horizontal glazing bands, so the profile feels low and balanced despite the tri-deck arrangement.

The sharp forward sheer line and slightly raked bow give the yacht a purposeful stance underway, while the high bulwarks and Portuguese bridge reinforce the long-range cruising character. Large black-framed windows break up the white superstructure and draw more natural light into the interior, as well as helping the yacht feel visually lighter across the main deck.

Outdoor spaces lean towards practical family cruising rather than oversized resort styling. The aft deck centres around a large teak dining table for up to 10 guests, with built-in seating, refrigeration and service storage close at hand so the space works well for extended meals outdoors. Above, the bridge deck aft creates a more relaxed lounge setting with crescent-shaped seating beneath custom sunshades, while the sundeck opens up into a flexible entertainment area thanks to twin tender cranes positioned port and starboard.

The foredeck keeps a traditional arrangement with moulded seating integrated into the bow area, wide side decks and substantial stainless steel ground tackle. Teak remains the dominant deck material across the guest areas, while refinished non-skid surfaces on the upper deck improve durability and footing underway.

A compact cockpit and swim platform extend the yacht’s connection to the water, with rod holders, a transom door, shower fittings and direct engine room access built into the stern arrangement. The Novurania 540 Equator tender sits ready for deployment from the upper deck, supported by twin davits that also free up deck space once toys and tenders are launched.

Interior Design

Sylvia Bolton’s interior refit brought a softer and brighter atmosphere into AFTERGLOW, while the yacht still retains much of the rich American superyacht character associated with Christensen interiors from this period. Brazilian honey teak and mahogany joinery run throughout the accommodation spaces, paired with galaxy granite, mirrored detailing, stainless steel accents and updated European fabrics.

The main salon has an open and residential feel thanks to large picture windows on both sides and a relatively uncluttered furniture layout. A crescent-shaped sofa anchors the seating area while leather occasional chairs and built-in cabinetry soften the room without crowding the floorplan. The player piano adds a distinctly traditional touch, though the updated Sony entertainment systems and integrated surround sound bring the space into a more modern setup.

Forward, the dining salon uses a custom mahogany table for eight guests beneath a circular mirrored soffit detail with integrated lighting. Teak cabinetry and built-in buffet storage frame the dining area so the room keeps a formal character while still feeling practical for extended cruising.

The skylounge shifts towards a more casual atmosphere with wraparound desk space, lounge seating and broad views through large side windows. Sliding glass doors connect directly onto the bridge deck aft, so the indoor and outdoor spaces work together naturally during entertaining.

Mirrored ceiling panels, reflective finishes and large windows help increase the sense of volume throughout the yacht, particularly in the master accommodation. Gold waterfall faucets, marble bathrooms and extensive timber joinery reflect the styling direction common to luxury yacht interiors of the era, though the updated soft furnishings and lighter fabrics stop the spaces from feeling overly heavy.

Accommodation

AFTERGLOW accommodates eight guests across four staterooms, with the arrangement built around a full-beam owner’s suite positioned forward on the main deck. This on-deck master benefits from large windows, extensive storage and separate his-and-hers marble bathrooms connected by a jacuzzi tub with gold waterfall fittings. The suite also includes lounge seating, a vanity area, entertainment systems and climate-controlled Tempur-Pedic bedding.

A second full-beam VIP suite sits below deck and effectively functions as another master cabin. The space includes a king-size bed, lounge seating, walk-in wardrobe and his-and-hers marble bathrooms with heated floors and jacuzzi tub arrangements, so the lower accommodation keeps the same emphasis on comfort and privacy as the main-deck suite.

The remaining guest accommodation consists of two queen staterooms positioned port and starboard below deck. Both cabins feature Brazilian teak cabinetry, upholstered headboards, entertainment systems and marble en suites, while opening portlights and custom Roman shades bring natural light into the lower deck spaces.

Crew accommodation sits separately forward and houses five to six crew across three cabins. The captain’s cabin includes a private en suite and desk area, while two additional crew cabins use oversized bunks and shared facilities. A dedicated crew mess, galley and laundry centre support longer operations onboard and help maintain separation between guest and service circulation.

Performance & Capabilities

Powered by twin diesel Detroit Diesel (12V-92's) 16-cylinder 1,100hp engines, motor yacht Afterglow is capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 25,852 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 2,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Her semi-displacement hull design means she offers a great balance of space and speed.

Amenities

A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort.
