WATCH: Builder Reveals the Hidden Engineering Behind the Bering 88 Explorer Yacht

A new behind-the-scenes construction walkthrough has revealed the hidden engineering inside the Bering 88 explorer yacht, offering a rare look at the systems, structural design and technical craftsmanship that disappear behind the finished interiors long before delivery.

Currently in production, the Bering 88 has been developed as a long-range explorer yacht with a focus on offshore capability, reliability and extended cruising. The technical walkthrough is presented by Bering Yachts founder and owner Alexei Mikhailov, who guides viewers through the vessel before the interior fit-out begins, explaining the engineering decisions, onboard systems and construction techniques that underpin the explorer yacht's long-range capabilities.

A rare look beneath the finished interiors

With much of the interior yet to be installed, the walkthrough exposes areas that owners will never normally see once the yacht is complete. Cable trays, hydraulic pipes, insulation and structural penetrations remain fully visible, illustrating the complexity of a modern explorer yacht before decorative finishes conceal the engineering beneath. According to the builder, the Bering 88's electrical network alone rivals the complexity of a commercial aircraft, while every cable and pipe is carefully routed, labelled and separated to simplify future servicing and maximise reliability.

Engineering focused on safety and long-range comfort

Much of the presentation focuses on systems designed to improve safety and onboard comfort during extended cruising. Every penetration through decks and watertight bulkheads is fully sealed to maintain structural integrity, while dedicated air handling units deliver temperature- and humidity-controlled fresh air to each cabin regardless of outside conditions. Zinc-coated steel ventilation ducting is used in place of plastic to improve fire resistance, while approximately 70mm of rockwool insulation throughout the motor yacht provides both thermal efficiency and acoustic isolation between living spaces.

Explorer yacht systems designed for reliability

The technical tour also highlights several engineering solutions intended to support remote cruising. Protected propeller shafts are housed within substantial skegs to reduce the risk of damage from floating debris or accidental groundings, while an active cathodic protection system continuously guards the steel hull against galvanic corrosion. The Bering 88 is also equipped with two pairs of fin stabilisers, a configuration the builder says improves stability while reducing unwanted steering effects compared with a single larger pair of fins.

Preparing for extended time away from shore

Beyond propulsion and structural engineering, the walkthrough explores systems developed specifically for long-range operation. Optional walk-in refrigeration and freezer space allows owners to carry provisions for extended voyages, while waste treatment systems process black and grey water to comply with increasingly strict environmental regulations. Additional features such as hydraulic trash compactors and dedicated storage areas further support life aboard during long-distance cruising, reducing reliance on frequent marina visits.

Technical details that shape the finished yacht

Although buyers are often drawn to a boat's styling, accommodation and onboard amenities, the Bering 88 walkthrough demonstrates how much of an explorer yacht's capability is determined long before the interiors are installed. By revealing the structural engineering and technical systems normally hidden behind bulkheads and joinery, the presentation offers valuable insight into the work required to create a yacht capable of comfortable long-range cruising in demanding conditions.

The Bering 88 forms part of Bering's expanding explorer yacht portfolio, which also includes the larger Bering 110. Designed for extended offshore cruising, the 33-metre model offers expansive deck spaces and a range of 4,000 nautical miles, demonstrating the shipyard's continued focus on robust engineering, long-range capability and owner-led customisation.
