Design & Construction
Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 15m beam and a 7.23m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 2,864 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in early 2013 with the keel laid under the project name 'Solar'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in September 2016 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in March 2018.
Exterior Design
Black Pearl is built around the DynaRig concept, and that defines the entire exterior from hull form to deck layout. At 106m (347.8ft) with a 15m (49.2ft) beam and 7.23m (23.7ft) draft, she was the largest sailing yacht at launch and remains the largest yacht designed around this system.
The hull and superstructure are finished entirely in black, so the long sheer line reads as one continuous sweep, while the fine bow entry with a pronounced flare helps reduce resistance and keeps the foredeck dry. Steel construction forms the hull, and aluminium reduces weight above, while a 300-tonne ballast system stabilises over 1,300 tonnes of onboard systems and outfitting.
Three 70m (229.7ft) carbon masts rise above the deck, each carrying square sails supported by curved yards. These furl into the masts, and full deployment takes around six minutes, so the transition from engine to sail is quick and controlled. Total sail area reaches about 2,900sqm (31,215sqft), and the scale of the rig dominates the yacht’s profile from any angle.
The foredeck remains unusually open, so it can act as a flexible lounge or activity space, while the main deck aft integrates a 4m (13ft) pool with a counter-current system. Above, the upper deck aft holds a jacuzzi for eight and an exterior dining area, and the sundeck works as a social hub with seating, bar and adaptable layouts.
Interior Design
Inside, the direction shifts completely, and classical Louis XVI styling replaces the technical exterior. Gilded detailing, carved wood panels and polished marble run throughout, while silk carpets and antique-style furniture soften the larger volumes.
The main saloon sits at the centre of the yacht, and large windows on both sides bring in light while keeping a strong link to the sea. Seating zones spread across the space, and a bar and formal dining area sit close by, so the room can adapt between relaxed use and formal entertaining. Decorative elements such as chandeliers and a piano add weight to the overall feel without closing the space down.
Sightlines carry through the interior, and from the forward office and library the view stretches nearly 100m (328.1ft) to the stern platform, which gives a clear sense of the yacht’s scale. A skylight above this forward space frames the mast structure, so the sailing rig remains visible from within.
The dining room extends outward through opening shell doors, creating terraces on both sides, and this keeps the connection between interior and exterior constant. Below, the beach club and wellness area forms one of the most flexible spaces on board. Sliding partitions allow it to open fully or divide into zones, and facilities include a gym, hammam, sauna, massage room and juice bar, all set at sea level with direct access to the swim platform.
Advanced systems run quietly in the background. HVAC, insulation and energy recovery systems manage temperature and efficiency, while heat from the engines is reused across the yacht, so the traditional styling sits alongside modern technical infrastructure.
Accommodation
Black Pearl accommodates up to 12 guests across seven cabins, with flexibility to increase capacity depending on layout. A full-beam stateroom includes a private lounge and an opening balcony, so the space extends outward when required.
Two VIP cabins sit alongside this, each with sliding partitions leading to lounge areas with sofa beds, so they can adapt for additional guests. Further cabins include a double and a twin, all finished in the same classical style with en suite facilities.
Crew accommodation supports a team of 27, so service levels remain consistent across all areas of the yacht.
Performance & Capabilities
Black Pearl’s sailing system is centred around a revolutionary DynaRig setup with three free-standing carbon masts, each rising to 70m (230ft). These advanced rigs support a total of 2,900 square metres of sail, divided across curved yard arms into 15 low-load panels per mast. All sails can be deployed in under seven minutes, and the entire rig is fully automated, enabling one person to trim or rotate the masts via touchscreen controls at the bridge.
This level of precision and responsiveness enables the yacht to sail efficiently even in light conditions. Under sail alone, Black Pearl has recorded speeds of 24.5 knots, with projected hull speeds approaching 30 knots. The ability to rotate the masts, rather than relying solely on sheet trim, allows for accurate tuning and balance across the full sail plan. Each mast also flexes at the top under load, further contributing to control and efficiency.
A key feature of Black Pearl’s design is her capacity to regenerate power while underway. The variable-pitch propellers can be feathered to reduce drag or adjusted to act as turbines, producing electricity to charge the yacht’s battery banks while sailing. This power supports all hotel loads, allowing for long stretches of “Silent Ship” operation without engine use. Air handling systems, lighting, and appliances can all be sustained through energy harvested under sail.
Additional energy comes from integrated solar panels embedded into the spars, yards, and superstructure. Plans for lightweight, flexible solar panels mounted directly on the sails are in progress, potentially delivering around 160 to 170 kilowatt-hours per day across 1,400 square metres of surface area.
The entire power system is governed by a centralised management interface that continuously optimises generation and load distribution. Propeller pitch can be adjusted on demand, switching from propulsion to regeneration as needed, and waste heat from the engines is recaptured to warm the yacht’s interior and water systems.
Thanks to these combined technologies, Black Pearl is capable of transatlantic passages with no fossil fuel consumption. Her sailing performance, power regeneration, and low-drag systems work in harmony to deliver speed, range, and sustainability on a scale rarely seen in the sailing world.
Leisure & Entertainment
One of the most distinctive entertainment features sits high on the mizzen mast. Here a 9m x 14m (29.5ft x 45.9ft) projection screen forms the centrepiece of the yacht’s outdoor cinema, which is among the largest ever installed on a private vessel, all in addition to an internal cinema area. A jacuzzi on the upper deck comfortably accommodates eight guests and a 4m (13ft) swimming pool on the main deck features a flow jet. In terms of watersports, Black Pearl provides all options for wakeboarding, kayaking, water skiing, jet ski adventures, and a flite board in addition to snorkeling equipment and sea bobs.
Wellness
Black Pearl provides a sauna, Hammam and a massage table for guest wellness and relaxation.
Tenders
Black Pearl carries three tenders: a 10.40m (34ft) Pascoe Limo tender, a 9.8m (32ft) Pascoe Beachlander tender, and a 5.65m (18.5ft) Williams open tender
