Design & Construction

Designed around a full displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 15m beam and a 7.23m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 2,864 GT (Gross Tonnes).

Construction started in early 2013 with the keel laid under the project name 'Solar'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in September 2016 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in March 2018.

Exterior Design

Black Pearl’s profile is a confident blend of flowing motion and architectural boldness. Her hull and superstructure, finished entirely in black, create a dramatic canvas for the rest of the design. There’s a sleekness to her form that comes not just from her low, continuous sheer line but from the fine entry of the bow and the unbroken tension of her silhouette.

Built on a steel full-displacement hull with an aluminium superstructure, her structure was shaped for speed and stability. Measuring 106m (347.8ft) in length with a beam of 15m (49.2ft), Black Pearl’s hull was constructed in Rotterdam over a period of 14 months using plate steel as thin as 8mm. Her lightweight aluminium upperworks reduce top weight, and over 1,300 tonnes of outfitting is balanced by a 300-tonne ballast system.

The hull form is as much about efficiency as aesthetics. The sharply flared bow is engineered to slice through water with minimal resistance, while lifting over waves to deliver a smooth, dry ride. When underway in typical cruising seas, the foredeck remains remarkably clean thanks to this clever shaping. The fine underwater lines and streamlined appendages were developed for minimal drag under sail, enabling performance far beyond typical motor-sailors of this scale.

Black Pearl’s open-air spaces are designed for indulgence and exploration, without losing sight of the yacht’s serious sailing purpose. The decks are spread across three levels, combining practical sailing hardware with generous guest relaxation zones. The upper deck offers a large jacuzzi with seating for eight, while a 4m (13ft) swimming pool fitted with a flow jet system is positioned aft on the main deck.

The foredeck remains dry even in moderate swell thanks to the yacht’s distinctive bow, which lifts over the waves and disperses spray outward. It’s a functional shape, but one that also contributes to the yacht’s assertive stance on the water. At the stern, a tender garage houses three custom tenders: a 10.4m (34ft) Pascoe limousine, a 9.8m (32ft) Pascoe Beachlander, and a 5.65m (18.5ft) Williams open tender.

For entertainment, the mizzen mast transforms into a massive 9m x 14m (29.5ft x 45.9ft) cinema screen, forming the centrepiece of the largest outdoor theatre ever fitted to a private yacht. A full suite of watersports gear is carried on board, including jet skis, sea bobs, flite boards, wakeboards, kayaks, water skis, and snorkelling equipment.

The synergy between her high-tech features and striking looks makes Black Pearl a beacon of sustainable innovation and design.

Interior Design

Black Pearl’s interior was originally developed by Valentina Zannier at Nuvolari-Lenard, with additional input from French designer Gerard Villate. The result is a deeply elegant space inspired by the decorative grandeur of Louis XVI style. Traditional French influences are evident in the gilded detailing, neoclassical motifs, and rich textiles, while the layout and systems reflect the needs of a modern sailing yacht.

Spaces across the three interior decks are carefully proportioned and richly appointed, blending classical refinement with advanced technology. Carved paneling, polished marbles, and antique-style furnishings create an atmosphere of understated opulence. The use of soft lighting and reflective finishes lends a warm glow to the rooms, while large windows introduce natural light and connection to the sea.

The main saloon features plush seating areas, formal dining space, and a bar. This area flows naturally into the guest spaces and connects seamlessly with the exterior decks. Entertainment options include an indoor cinema lounge, complementing the vast exterior screen mounted on the mizzen mast.

Forward of the main saloon, the bridge and sailing station are a focal point of technical innovation. The helm controls the DynaRig system with touchscreen interfaces that manage mast rotation, sail deployment, and system diagnostics. This level of automation reduces crew workload and allows the yacht to be sailed with precision by a single operator from the bridge if necessary.

The wellness area includes a sauna, Hammam, and massage table, providing a dedicated space for relaxation. Throughout the yacht, advanced HVAC and air purification systems maintain interior comfort while minimising energy consumption. Waste heat from the propulsion systems is repurposed to warm interior spaces and water, and all glazing is heavily insulated for thermal efficiency. Black Pearl’s interiors balance old-world craftsmanship with the highest levels of modern comfort and environmental stewardship.

Accommodation

Black Pearl offers accommodation for ten guests, extendable to 14. The cabin layout includes a spacious full-beam stateroom with a lounge leading to an opening balcony. Two VIP cabins feature sliding doors to a lounge area, equipped with sofa beds for increased guest capacity, along with an additional en-suite bathroom. The onboard accommodation is completed by a further double cabin and a twin cabin. With 27 crew onboard, Black Pearl ensures efficient operational activity and an exceptional guest experience.

Performance & Capabilities

Black Pearl’s sailing system is centred around a revolutionary DynaRig setup with three free-standing carbon masts, each rising to 70m (230ft). These advanced rigs support a total of 2,900 square metres of sail, divided across curved yard arms into 15 low-load panels per mast. All sails can be deployed in under seven minutes, and the entire rig is fully automated, enabling one person to trim or rotate the masts via touchscreen controls at the bridge.

This level of precision and responsiveness enables the yacht to sail efficiently even in light conditions. Under sail alone, Black Pearl has recorded speeds of 24.5 knots, with projected hull speeds approaching 30 knots. The ability to rotate the masts, rather than relying solely on sheet trim, allows for accurate tuning and balance across the full sail plan. Each mast also flexes at the top under load, further contributing to control and efficiency.

A key feature of Black Pearl’s design is her capacity to regenerate power while underway. The variable-pitch propellers can be feathered to reduce drag or adjusted to act as turbines, producing electricity to charge the yacht’s battery banks while sailing. This power supports all hotel loads, allowing for long stretches of “Silent Ship” operation without engine use. Air handling systems, lighting, and appliances can all be sustained through energy harvested under sail.

Additional energy comes from integrated solar panels embedded into the spars, yards, and superstructure. Plans for lightweight, flexible solar panels mounted directly on the sails are in progress, potentially delivering around 160 to 170 kilowatt-hours per day across 1,400 square metres of surface area.

The entire power system is governed by a centralised management interface that continuously optimises generation and load distribution. Propeller pitch can be adjusted on demand, switching from propulsion to regeneration as needed, and waste heat from the engines is recaptured to warm the yacht’s interior and water systems.

Thanks to these combined technologies, Black Pearl is capable of transatlantic passages with no fossil fuel consumption. Her sailing performance, power regeneration, and low-drag systems work in harmony to deliver speed, range, and sustainability on a scale rarely seen in the sailing world.

Leisure & Entertainment

The yacht features the largest exterior cinema on the mizzen mast, measuring an impressive 9m x 14m (approximately 29.5 ft x 45.9 ft), in addition to an internal cinema area. A jacuzzi on the upper deck comfortably accommodates eight guests and a 4m (13ft) swimming pool on the main deck features a flow jet.  In terms of watersports, Black Pearl provides all options for wakeboarding, kayaking, water skiing, jet ski adventures, and a flite board in addition to snorkeling equipment and sea bobs.

Wellness

Black Pearl provides a sauna, Hammam and a massage table for guest wellness and relaxation.

Tenders

Black Pearl carries three tenders: a 10.40m (34ft) Pascoe Limo tender, a 9.8m (32ft) Pascoe Beachlander tender, and a 5.65m (18.5ft) Williams open tender
