120m Amels Superyacht Project Tanzanite Underway on Sea Trials

The 120m Amels full custom superyacht Project Tanzanite has begun sea trials in Vlissingen, marking a major milestone toward her completion and delivery in 2026.

Sea trials mark the first major phase of real-world testing for the vessel, following her float-out earlier this year. Over the coming months, more than 1,000 craftsmen and women from Damen Yachting and its global supplier network will continue to refine her systems, detailing, and interiors ahead of delivery next year.

Originally launched from Damen Yachting’s hull facility in Galati, Romania, Project Tanzanite arrived in the Netherlands in June 2023 and has since progressed through extensive outfitting at the shipyard’s Vlissingen City facilities. At 6,083 gross tons, she represents the largest and most technically ambitious yacht ever built under the Amels name.

Design and Construction

Project Tanzanite was commissioned as a full custom project managed by Deeside Maritime, which has overseen the build for the past two years and will continue through completion. Her exterior design is the work of Norwegian designer Espen Øino, whose profile balances a clipper bow with a five-deck superstructure and long, horizontal glazing that emphasizes openness and proportion.

Although details remain confidential, renderings of the yacht show a sculptural profile with expansive outdoor spaces across multiple decks, including two swimming pools and dual helipads. The main deck pool forms a social centerpiece aft, while the upper decks offer shaded dining areas and open-air terraces designed for extended cruising.

Interior Direction by Zuretti Design

While the shipyard has not confirmed official interior details for the current phase, earlier information identifies Zuretti Design as the studio behind Tanzanite’s interiors.

The scheme reportedly focuses on warm materials, soft lighting, and grand architectural elements, including a spiraling marble staircase encircling a glass elevator. Accommodation is expected to host 22 guests across 11 suites, with quarters for 44 crew.

Project Tanzanite is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system equipped with Kongsberg Elegance® pods, enabling a top speed of 18 knots. The setup is engineered to deliver low noise and vibration levels, enhanced maneuverability, and high efficiency, aligning with Damen Yachting’s broader investment in next-generation propulsion technologies.

Final Outfitting Toward 2026 Delivery

Now entering her final outfitting phase, Project Tanzanite stands as the most significant full custom project in the Dutch builder’s history. Her ongoing sea trials represent the culmination of more than two years of coordinated work between Damen Yachting, Espen Øino, Zuretti Design, and Deeside Maritime -  setting the stage for her delivery in 2026.

According to YachtBuyer Market Watch, the largest yacht database in the world, Amels currently has 10 yachts either in build or on order. This includes units from the popular Amels 80 and the Amels 60.

As sea trials progress, Project Tanzanite moves closer to becoming the largest yacht ever completed by Amels, marking a defining achievement for Damen Yachting. Her 2026 delivery will not only expand the builder’s full custom portfolio but also reaffirm the Netherlands’ standing as a global leader in large yacht construction.
