Originally designed for commercial applications, the Volvo Penta IPS Electric (E) range introduces a lineup of five electric drivelines delivering power from 220 kW to 1.1 MW per driveline, scalable to 4.5 MW in quad configurations.
The system combines high-performance electric motors with Volvo Penta’s proven IPS platform - celebrated for its forward-facing propulsion, Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), and joystick-based maneuvering.

Our aim with this new range is to deliver a plug-and-play electric propulsion solution, keeping the uniqueness of our core competence, but also designed to scale with 3rd party integrators

“IPS systems are already a game-changer for owner-operators,” notes yacht design consultant Tom Rainsford. “With joystick control, dynamic positioning, and now electric drive, it removes much of the intimidation factor from docking and close-quarters handling - particularly in adverse conditions or tight marinas.”

Designed for the Future of Yachting
At the core of this development is the seamless integration of electric motors directly into the IPS driveline, retaining key features like Joystick Driving, Dynamic Positioning System, Autopilot, and Assisted Docking. These features are vital not just for commercial operators, but increasingly for private yacht owners who prefer to operate their vessels themselves.
Why IPS + Electric Is a Perfect Match
The Volvo Penta IPS system has long been recognized for efficiency, with its forward-facing propellers pulling the vessel through the water rather than pushing it. This design inherently reduces drag and improves fuel economy. Coupled with electric power, the gains are even greater:
- Whisper-quiet operation and minimal vibration
- Zero emissions in pure electric mode
- Rapid acceleration and responsive control
- Extended range when paired with marine generator sets and hybrid battery systems

Full-Featured System Launching Late 2025
The first models, including the IPS900E (up to 515 kW) and IPS650E (up to 374 kW), will roll out in Q4 2025, with all five electric drivelines to follow. Each installation includes an integrated Energy Management System (EMS) allowing captains to select from Pure Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Hybrid Fuel modes, adapting seamlessly to different mission profiles.
In addition, Volvo Penta plans to offer a complete ‘helm-to-propeller’ ecosystem, integrating the electric IPS package with optional onboard generator sets, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and DC grid architecture. Through its subsidiary ZEM, Volvo Penta can also deliver full turnkey electric or hybrid solutions for OEMs and custom projects.

A Smart Move for Yacht Designers and Owners
For yacht builders and naval architects, the new electric IPS platform offers a modular and scalable solution that simplifies installation while freeing up valuable onboard space. And for owner-operators, it represents a significant step toward easier, more intuitive vessel control - backed by Volvo Penta’s robust global support network.
As Volvo Penta accelerates toward a zero-emissions marine future, this latest innovation firmly positions the company as a pioneer in sustainable, high-performance propulsion.
