70m CRN Superyacht Project Thunderball Hits the Water in Ancona

Italian shipyard CRN has officially launched the 70m Project Thunderball, which is expected to be delivered as superyacht Cerulean later this year.

Known as CRN 145 during construction, the yacht was developed by CRN alongside Dutch studio Vripack and Milan-based Nauta Design. She entered the water at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona and is now preparing for final completion, sea trials, and delivery later this year.

An Unusual Hull Development

One of the most distinctive aspects of the project lies below the waterline. During development, extensive tank testing led the design team to eliminate a bulbous bow after analysis indicated the hull would operate more efficiently without one - an unusual decision for a yacht of this size.

With a gross tonnage of 1,100 GT, the yacht's sharp entry and curved bilges were developed to reduce resistance and support comfortable long-range cruising. A large swim platform, enlarged at the owner's request, provides additional space for watersports and easy access to the water.

The tank testing facility said they’d never seen it before but advised us against adding the bulb as the hull is already super-efficient.”

Technology Hidden Within the Design

Nauta Design conceived the interior as a contemporary interpretation of maritime design, balancing clean aesthetics with practical functionality. Technical systems have been carefully integrated throughout the yacht to maintain uncluttered living spaces.

Project Thunderball is also equipped with an Energy Storage System designed to optimize onboard power use. The system supports peak-shaving functions and can enable silent operation at anchor under certain conditions. Power comes from twin MAN V12 engines producing 1,213kW each, delivering a top speed of 15.5 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

A Five-Deck Yacht for Extended Voyages

Built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, Project Thunderball was designed around an owner's brief centered on long-distance cruising, efficient operation, and regatta support duties. The yacht measures 69.7m with an 11m beam, spans five decks, and offers accommodation for 12 guests across six suites, including an owner's suite. Crew quarters provide accommodation for up to 15 staff.

Vripack developed the exterior styling, preliminary naval architecture, and general arrangement of the motor yacht, while Nauta Design created the interior concept and exterior guest spaces. CRN was responsible for engineering, final naval architecture, and project management.

The yacht's profile draws inspiration from classic sailing vessels, pairing an elongated bow and sweeping sheer line with a navy-blue hull and white superstructure.
