Running from October 28 to November 1, FLIBS follows Draak's recent appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show alongside her 111m companion yacht Leviathan. Originally delivered by Oceanco in 2014 as Equanimity, and later known as Tranquility, Draak returned to the Dutch builder for a major program that changed the yacht's operational purpose.
Now part of the Inkfish fleet, the 2,894GT yacht has been configured to support scientific research, marine exploration and specialist diving operations. The project involved Oceanco's Life Cycle Support and Design teams, owner representatives YTMC, Y.CO and Inkfish, specialist suppliers, and the crews of Draak and Leviathan.
How Has the 93m Oceanco Draak Been Rebuilt?
Rather than approaching Draak as a conventional refit, the project retained the existing 92.9m platform while making substantial structural, technical and interior changes around her new role.
Oceanco drew on its original design and engineering information from the yacht's construction to develop the new systems and structural modifications. Draak now operates alongside Leviathan, adding research, diving, tender and equipment capacity to the wider Inkfish program.
By combining original build knowledge with operational insight and close collaboration across all stakeholders, we have created a yacht that offers greater operational versatility while enhancing onboard capabilities for research, exploration and extended cruising.”
- Life Cycle Support Project Manager Edwin Schneider
The rebuild retains Draak's 14.5m beam, while her overall length has increased by just over one meter following changes to the swim platform. Exterior design is credited to Oceanco, with naval architecture by Oceanco and Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture. Vedder handled the yacht's new interior outfitting.
Inside the Redesigned Interior of 93m Oceanco Draak
Draak's interior has been reconsidered around the people expected to live and work aboard for extended periods. The former main saloon is now a shared dining room, while the upper deck saloon has become a Chef's Lab intended for smaller dining settings, menu development and chef training. Accommodation includes an owner's stateroom and eight guest cabins.
A communal mess has also become an important part of daily life aboard, creating a shared space for guests and crew. The changes follow a similar people-focused approach aboard Leviathan, with both yachts developed around long-term operations, crew welfare and greater interaction between those onboard.
Oceanco Installs Its First Decompression Chamber Aboard Draak
One of the largest changes is found at water level, where Draak's former beach club and spa have been replaced by a dedicated dive center.
The area now carries diving equipment and a medical treatment room, alongside the first decompression chamber installed aboard an Oceanco yacht. Developed with specialist manufacturer Hytech-Pommec, the six-person chamber supports oxygen and Heliox decompression procedures through an integrated Built-In Breathing System.
Installing the chamber inside an existing superyacht presented an unusual engineering challenge. Rather than cutting a new opening into Draak's structure, the unit was developed around the dimensions of the yacht's existing access route.
Its overall height was reduced and several components were repositioned before a dedicated rail system was engineered to move the chamber aboard with only millimeters of clearance. Seating, controls and other interior details were also specified for the yacht.
How Draak's Aft Deck Was Rebuilt for Tender Operations
Draak's transformation extends to her exterior decks. The former upper-deck aft helipad has been removed, opening space for a new tender operations area on the main deck aft.
The yacht now carries a fleet of specialist craft supporting diving, watersports and rescue operations:
- Scylla - dedicated dive boat
- Minotaur - RIB tender
- Nautique Paragon - sports tender
- Two Ribeye SOLAS tenders - dedicated rescue craft
Handling the expanded fleet required substantial new lifting equipment. A 12.6-tonne Van Driel jib crane with 11m outreach has been installed on the upper deck aft, while the main deck carries a custom C-davit system using twin 6.7-tonne units. Oceanco says it is the largest C-davit system yet produced by Van Driel.
Modular chocks allow containerized equipment to be carried when required, while the extended swim platform incorporates an extendable boarding platform and retractable fender system. The changes have given Draak a significantly different operational role from the motor yacht delivered in 2014, with her exterior spaces now configured around diving, research and extended exploration.
