Azimut Named Official Yachting Partner of Ferrari Hypersail With Custom Fly 72 Tow Boat

Azimut Yachts has been named Technical Partner and Official Yachting Partner of Ferrari Hypersail, with a heavily modified Azimut Fly 72 set to play a direct role in testing Ferrari's new 100ft foiling ocean-racing yacht.

The partnership covers both shoreside and on-water operations. Ferrari Hypersail has established its operational base at Azimut's Livorno facility, while the purpose-built Azimut Fly 72 x Ferrari Hypersail will be used to tow the sailing prototype during its first flight tests and later development campaigns.

The project gives Azimut an unusually technical role beyond supplying a support yacht. Its R&D and Technical Departments have reworked the existing Fly 72 platform to meet the demands of bringing an unrigged foiling yacht up to take-off speed.

Azimut Fly 72 Reworked for 30-Knot Hypersail Testing

During early trials, Ferrari Hypersail will be tested without its mast and sails. The modified Fly 72 must tow the prototype at around 30 knots, allowing engineers to study its take-off characteristics and behaviour once supported by its foils.

Azimut has therefore made substantial changes to the production platform. A weight-reduction program centred on extensive carbon fiber use has cut approximately six tonnes, while the propulsion installation now provides 4,000hp. The hull of the yacht has also received a dedicated tow post engineered to withstand the static and dynamic loads expected during testing.

The standard Fly 72 is powered by twin 1,400hp MAN engines, while the Ferrari Hypersail version has been uprated to 4,000hp.

The changes are significant when set against the regular Azimut Fly 72, which measures 22.57m and is offered with twin 1,400hp MAN V12 engines for a quoted 31-knot top speed. The model also has a four-cabin layout, an Alberto Mancini exterior and a Fabio Fantolino interior.

The Fly 72 has also been adapted for the Hypersail team, with crew accommodation and VIP hospitality planned for later testing phases and major events.

What Is Ferrari Hypersail?

Ferrari first revealed the Hypersail program in 2025 as its move into offshore ocean racing. The motor yacht is a 100ft foiling monohull designed by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier, with Ferrari describing it as the first monohull of its size to use a foil on the keel and fly using three points of contact. Ferrari has also said the yacht is being developed to operate using energy generated from renewable sources onboard.

The program entered a new development stage in 2026, with Voltolini taking over as project leader as work shifted from the initial design and construction phase toward systems installation, validation and performance development. Pressmare

The Ferrari Hypersail project was born out of the desire to create something never seen before, bringing Ferrari’s racing DNA to the world of ocean sailing yachts.

Azimut's role places the builder directly within that testing program. Lorenzo Giorgetti, Ferrari's Chief Racing Revenue Officer, said the Fly 72 project and Livorno base would support key development and testing activities, while Azimut General Manager Andrea Antichi pointed to the partnership as an extension of the builder's internal R&D work.

From the Fly 70 to Azimut's Largest-Ever Yacht

The Ferrari agreement arrives during a busy period for Azimut's wider model range. The new Azimut Fly 70 made its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026. Measuring 21.47m, it sits immediately below the Fly 72 and uses GRP and carbon fiber construction, with exterior design by Alberto Mancini and interiors by Fabio Fantolino.

More recently, the Azimut Magellano 27M won the Superyachts over 24 metres category at the 2026 Design Innovation Award in Genoa. The 27m model starts the third generation of Azimut's Magellano range and features a Dual Mode hull developed by the Azimut|Benetti Group R&D Department with P.L. Ausonio Naval Architecture.

At the top of the fleet sits the new Azimut Grande 44M, the builder's largest yacht to date. After making its world debut at Cannes, YachtBuyer stepped aboard the new flagship during the Monaco Yacht Show 2026, getting a closer look at its four-deck arrangement and owner-focused upper deck.

The Grande 44M can accommodate ten guests in five cabins and introduces extensive carbon fiber construction alongside Azimut's mild-hybrid technology. Seven units had already been sold before its official Cannes debut, giving the flagship a strong commercial start as Azimut expands at the larger end of its portfolio.
