- Seven-panel glass Skydome
- Double-height art gallery
- Methanol fuel-cell hybrid system
Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 18m beam and a 4m draft. The yacht is built over 4 decks with an internal volume of 6,300 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in early 2022 with the keel laid under the project name 'Cosmos'. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. Launched in March 2023 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in March 2026.
Exterior Design
At 114.2m (375ft), Nausicaä abandons almost every convention that defines a modern superyacht. Designed entirely by industrial designer Marc Newson, the yacht rejects stacked decks, sharp creases and aggressive styling in favour of a continuous sculptural form where hull and superstructure appear to merge into a single object.
One of Newson’s first decisions was to remove an entire deck from the arrangement normally expected on a yacht of this size. Nausicaä is still around 32m (105ft) high overall, but spreading that height across fewer decks makes the yacht appear lower while allowing considerably greater ceiling heights inside.
The metallic-grey hull sits beneath deep bands of reflective glazing that wrap around the yacht like a visor, while the near-vertical bow pushes volume forward without making the yacht feel heavy. A perfectly straight sheerline runs cleanly from stem to stern, which adds to the extraordinary sense of scale and length. A wide glass band encircles much of the upper structure, visually linking separate sections of the yacht into a single uninterrupted form.
Amidships, a huge glazed Skydome rises from the deck as one of the yacht’s defining visual features. The 3.15m (10.3ft) high private owner’s space is formed from seven curved glass panels, each measuring roughly 3m by 2.8m (9.8ft by 9.2ft), 62mm thick and weighing just over a tonne. Developing panes this large while retaining optical clarity through the curvature required extensive testing for the loads they could encounter at sea.
The bow itself carries one of the yacht's most distinctive features: a 19m (62ft) wide observation lounge positioned directly beneath the certified helipad and enclosed behind dark structural glazing. Newson moved the helipad up a deck to create the space, putting guests where anchoring gear or aviation facilities would normally dominate the bow of a yacht this size.
Above, oversized spherical domes surround a sculpted mast arrangement that feels more aerospace than something seen on a yacht. On the upper deck aft, a jacuzzi and pool carry the owner’s initials set into the floor.
Lürssen developed a custom 12.5m (41ft) sportfish specifically for Nausicaä's enclosed dry dock. Its dimensions, weight distribution and hull form were engineered around the yacht's hydraulic launch mechanism, allowing the tender to be stored, launched and recovered within the hull while preserving the yacht's exterior lines. The launch system handles loads of up to 16 tonnes before retracting to transform the empty dock into a sheltered extension of the aft swimming platform and beach club.
The second tender space is equally unconventional, as, once the crew tender is deployed, the area is used as a sushi-making room, complete with specialist knives. Nausicaä also carries a Newson-designed Triton submarine, adding another layer to a tender and toy programme that was developed alongside the yacht.
Her hull also meets Ice Class 1D standards, which gives the yacht serious long-range cruising capability alongside the radical design.
Interior Design
Nausicaä's interior was developed by Marc Newson around owner Yusaku Maezawa's unusually open brief. Newson has rethought how a vessel with 6,300GT of internal volume could be organised, and the finished rooms are much softer and more relaxed than the metallic exterior might lead you to expect.
Curves are everywhere, but rarely just for decoration. Walls roll into ceilings, balustrades sweep around openings and furniture follows the same rounded geometry, so there are very few hard corners interrupting the spaces. Newson also uses colour with a surprisingly light touch: mustard yellow, pale green, orange and soft blue sit against cream surfaces, pale timber and muted flooring. It stops the yacht feeling like a vast white gallery.
The centrepiece is the double-height gallery atrium that replaces the traditional main-deck formal saloon. Designed around the owner's private art collection, the space functions as both circulation hub and exhibition gallery. A broad white staircase rises through the middle like a piece of sculpture in its own right, while the upper-level walkway curves around the void. The extra height gives works such as Elmgreen & Dragset's The Choice room to breathe without the space feeling cavernous.
The cabin-deck lounge is much more informal. A deep mustard-coloured sofa wraps around one side of the room, with a ping-pong table taking centre stage and a long wall of glazing opening the room to the sea.
Above, the 56m² (603ft²) Skydome owner's study is one of the most distinctive private rooms aboard. Seven huge curved panes wrap around the space, but Newson has resisted the temptation to fill it with oversized furniture. A modest desk sits against the view, with loose seating gathered around the perimeter, while the circular ceiling treatment and carpet pattern echo the geometry of the dome itself. The room feels almost like an observatory, albeit a very comfortable one.
The owner's private accommodation extends to around 230m² (2,476ft²), but the bedroom is remarkably restrained for something of that scale. The customised Marc Newson Bumper Bed sits against a broad pale-green headboard that curves around it, with very little furniture competing for attention. Floor-to-ceiling glazing forward and to both sides does most of the heavy lifting, so the room feels more open than ornate.
The bathroom continues that softer approach with a sauna, steam room and Japanese ofuro. The sauna is finished in pale timber with deeply ribbed wall panels and curved benches, and it keeps a direct connection with the sea instead of turning into a sealed timber box. A huge pane of glass in the bathroom can also slide completely into the wall, opening the space to the outside.
The pool deck is considerably more playful. The swimming pool and Jacuzzi sit within a bright yellow sculpted surround that incorporates lounging positions around the water, while the nearby bar is carved from a single block of Carrara marble. It is a good example of Newson's knack for making a functional piece read almost like a piece of furniture.
At water level, the beach club takes a calmer route. Pale blue and cream seating, warm timber and a broad fold-down platform create a relatively intimate room despite the yacht's scale. Once the tender is launched and the dry dock converted, this lower level becomes part of a much larger waterside area.
The bow observation lounge completes the picture. Located beneath the helipad and behind heavily engineered structural glass, it has a 180º outlook directly ahead. The room can then change character after dark and be used for karaoke, which is perhaps the neatest summary of Nausicaä's interior as a whole: technically ambitious, visually unusual, but not terribly interested in being solemn.
Accommodation
Nausicaä offers accommodation for up to 18 guests in 9 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 36 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
Performance & Capabilities
Nausicaä uses a diesel-electric propulsion system built around five generators that supply power to electric Azimuth pods, supported by a substantial 2MW battery bank. This arrangement removes the need for traditional direct-drive shaft lines, which provides greater flexibility in machinery placement and helps free up volume for guest areas and technical spaces.
Each electric drive motor sits within a pod beneath the hull and can rotate through 360°, combining propulsion and steering without the conventional gearbox, shaft line and rudder arrangement. Beyond manoeuvrability, removing those components gave the design team greater freedom over the yacht's internal architecture.
Twin 500kW fuel cells convert methanol into hydrogen onboard, allowing silent, zero-emission operation in hotel mode and low-speed cruising without relying on the diesel generators. The fuel-cell system can support up to 15 days of zero-emission operation at anchor and enables cruising at up to 7 knots for approximately 1,000 nautical miles. For longer passages, Nausicaä has a standard cruising speed of 14 knots and a provisional top speed of 20 knots, making her one of the most advanced alternative-fuel superyachts delivered to date.
