Cannes, FranceThe multi-award winning 40m motor yacht Next was delivered to her owners in 2015 by Italian shipyard Columbus Yachts. The yacht's exteriors have been penned by HydroTec, while Hot Lab has designed her interiors.

Design & Construction
Designed around a semi-displacement aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 8.2m beam and a 2.29m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 398 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Launched in May 2015 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in September 2015.
Exterior Design
Next was the second yacht in Columbus Yachts’ 40M Sport Hybrid series, and Hydro Tec gave her a much sharper profile than the yard’s more traditional displacement yachts. The 40m (131.2ft) all aluminium hull has a near vertical bow, a low sweep through the superstructure and long bands of black glazing that run almost uninterrupted along the main deck. The dark mast and hardtop sit neatly above the white hull, so despite her 398GT volume she looks notably lean from the side.
A lot of the exterior design is tied to how the yacht is actually used. The main deck aft has a built in sofa and fixed table for dining or lounging, but the upper deck aft is the bigger social space, with a full bar, dining table and sun loungers beneath overlapping awnings. The plan leaves much of this deck open, so furniture can be moved around without the space feeling locked into a single arrangement.
Forward, the foredeck is treated as another guest area rather than simply a working deck. A mosaic tiled Jacuzzi sits between sunpads and loose seating, with another table nearby for meals or drinks. It is well separated from the aft terraces and gives guests somewhere quieter when the main entertaining areas are busy.
The stern works especially well. Folding the transom down opens a beach club of around 15m² (161sqft), complete with bar, head, showers and steps leading directly into the sea. Tender handling is moved to a side launching garage, so the beach club does not have to be cleared every time the Williams 435 goes in or out.
There is another clever piece of exterior architecture amidships. Sliding doors in the main saloon open onto side decks with drop down balconies on both sides, broadening the room when the yacht is at anchor and bringing the water much closer to the interior. Together with the beach club and foredeck Jacuzzi, they give Next several genuinely different connections with the sea instead of concentrating everything at the stern.
Interior Design
Hot Lab gave Next a bright contemporary interior built around light woods, marble, polished stainless steel and soft carpets laid over timber floors. The palette is deliberately restrained, which works well with the amount of glass Hydro Tec built into the exterior.
The main saloon combines lounge and dining areas within one long open room. A sliding marble bulkhead conceals the television when it is not needed, while the side doors open directly onto the drop down balconies. That changes the character of the room at anchor, turning what could have been a conventional enclosed saloon into a much wider living space with openings on both sides.
The upper saloon is deliberately smaller. Instead of using valuable upper deck length for another huge interior, Next gives more of the deck to the outdoor bar, dining and lounging areas aft. The inside space becomes a quieter second lounge, which is a better use of the deck on a yacht already carrying a substantial main saloon below.
Accommodation
Next accommodates up to 11 guests in five cabins, with the full beam owner’s suite forward on the main deck and four guest cabins below.
The owner’s suite has its own office, dressing room and a large en suite with a bathtub, double shower and twin marble basins. Its position forward keeps the cabin well away from the main saloon and the busiest exterior areas aft.
The lower deck has two doubles and two twins, with a Pullman in one of the twin cabins. The clever bit is aft: the two rear guest cabins can be joined by removing the dividing wall, creating one full beam VIP suite with its own sofa, coffee table and two en suites. It gives an owner the choice between maximum cabin count and a much larger second suite, which is useful for charter as well as private cruising.
Crew accommodation is arranged separately for up to eight, with working spaces concentrated forward and around the service core.
Performance & Capabilities
Next’s hybrid system is one of the most interesting parts of the yacht and still gives the Columbus 40M Sport Hybrid a useful technical edge. Twin MTU 12V 2000 M94 diesels produce 1,920hp each, while two 75kW Siemens EcoProp electric motors are integrated into the propulsion system.
The hybrid parallel arrangement can work in several ways. In Eco or electric mode, the MTUs can be shut down and the EcoProp motors drive the shafts using electricity supplied by the generators, reducing noise and vibration for low speed operation. Under diesel power, the same electric machines can work as shaft generators to supply hotel loads, allowing the conventional gensets to be switched off in suitable conditions. For maximum output, the diesel engines and electric motors can work together in boost mode.
With the MTUs doing the heavy lifting, Next reaches around 20 knots and cruises at 15 knots. At 12 knots she has a quoted range of approximately 3,300nm from 41,800 litres of fuel. The aluminium semi displacement hull, twin screw propulsion and electrical assistance give her a rather broader operating envelope than the usual 40m displacement yacht.
Amenities
A gym with all the latest equipment allows her guests to keep their workout routines while at sea. Air conditioning offers increased on-board comfort. Next also features deck jacuzzi which provides excellent views.
