Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement steel hull and superstructure she features a 16.2m beam and a 6.15m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 3,040 GT (Gross Tonnes).
Construction started in early 2015. The yacht was designed and constructed in compliance with the Lloyds Register technical standards. She was delivered to her owners in January 2022.
Exterior Design
Unlike a conventional superyacht, Wingman was built around capability rather than guest accommodation. Originally delivered as U-81, the 80.1m (263ft) vessel began life as a Damen offshore support platform before conversion into one of the world's largest shadow yachts.
Her profile leaves no doubt about her purpose. The towering commercial bow, high freeboard and forward-positioned superstructure come directly from Damen's offshore and naval experience, giving the yacht the strength and seaworthiness needed for global operations. Hard chines, a near-vertical stem and broad working decks create a look closer to an expedition ship than a luxury yacht, while the bridge sits high above the water behind reverse-raked wraparound windows that provide commanding visibility in all conditions.
Almost two-thirds of the yacht is given over to an expansive open working deck. A commercially certified helipad sits above the storage area, while a heavy-duty 12-tonne knuckle-boom crane launches and recovers large tenders, jet skis, submersibles and other equipment. When aircraft operations are not required, the surrounding deck can even double as a full-size basketball court. Rather than disguising her industrial roots, Wingman embraces them, turning a proven commercial platform into a highly capable expedition support vessel.
Interior Design
Little of Wingman's interior has been released publicly, though the known spaces reflect her role as a self-contained expedition base rather than a guest yacht. The interior was developed by Damen Yachting with practical, durable finishes throughout, providing comfortable accommodation and workspaces for the crew supporting Launchpad's operations.
Specialist facilities include a professional dive centre complete with a built-in decompression chamber, allowing complex diving expeditions without relying on shoreside support. A fully equipped gym and spa provide crew welfare during long deployments, while workshops and technical areas allow engineers to maintain tenders, helicopters and water toys far from port.
Accommodation
Wingman accommodates up to eight guests in four VIP suites, although guest accommodation is secondary to her operational role. Far more important is her capacity for up to 26 crew, providing space for engineers, helicopter personnel, dive specialists, security teams and tender crews needed to support large-scale expeditions.
This generous crew capacity allows Wingman to operate independently while providing round-the-clock logistical support for Launchpad, whether crossing oceans or exploring remote cruising grounds.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by twin diesel-electric Caterpillar (3512C) 1,947hp engines, motor yacht Wingman is capable of reaching a top speed of 16 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots.
Tenders
Wingman functions as a floating equipment base. Her enormous aft working deck carries large tenders, jet skis, dive equipment and specialist expedition gear, all handled by a 12-tonne crane designed for heavy commercial lifting.
Among her best-known assets is a large Princess chase boat measuring around 72ft, while the deck has also been configured to carry a deep-diving submarine alongside a wide range of water toys. A commercially certified helipad expands her capabilities even further, allowing helicopter transfers without interrupting life aboard the mothership.
