Built entirely in-house, the Damen YS53 platform continues the Dutch shipyard’s established approach to purpose-built support vessels, with exterior design, interior design, and naval architecture all developed internally.
Damen’s Latest YS53 Heads to Sea
Sea trials represent a significant milestone for the latest YS53, moving the project from construction and outfitting into real operating conditions at sea. For Damen’s Yacht Support range, the testing phase is particularly important, as the vessels are designed around operational capability as much as onboard comfort.
The YS53 series has been developed to support more ambitious cruising programs, giving owners additional capacity for tenders, water toys, specialist equipment, helicopters, and expedition infrastructure that would otherwise occupy valuable guest areas aboard a primary superyacht.
Designed to extend what is possible during an Owner’s time at sea, the Yacht Support 53 series offer the space, flexibility and support needed for more ambitious programmes."
Damen Yachting
Following her launch in March 2026, Rafter now joins the growing fleet of Yacht Support vessels operating globally alongside motherships, expedition yachts, and research-focused programs.
Operational Flexibility Shapes the YS53
At the center of the YS53 design is a strong emphasis on operational flexibility. The suopen aft deck spans more than 200 square meters and can be configured to carry large tenders, submersibles, vehicles, diving equipment, and expedition gear depending on the owner’s intended use.
A 15-ton crane supports the handling of heavy loads and large tenders, while the reinforced deck structure is engineered for touch-and-go helicopter operations. This setup allows owners to move higher-impact activities away from the mothership, freeing guest areas aboard the primary yacht while extending operational range.
The motor yacht’s exterior profile also reflects Damen’s commercial shipbuilding background. Like previous models in the Yacht Support line, the YS53 features the builder’s recognizable Sea Axe bow design, developed to improve seakeeping and reduce motion during long passages or rougher sea conditions.
This commercial influence remains central to the Yacht Support concept. Rather than functioning purely as an auxiliary yacht, the platform is designed as a working extension of a larger fleet, capable of supporting expedition cruising, aviation operations, diving programs, scientific work, and long-range logistics.
Interiors Designed for Long-Term Operation
While the exterior focuses heavily on utility, the onboard accommodation has been arranged for longer periods at sea. The YS53 accommodates up to eight guests alongside a crew of 10 plus the captain, with layouts intended to support both operational efficiency and onboard comfort.
Damen’s in-house interiors prioritize durable materials and practical spaces suited to intensive use. Crew areas have been designed for extended rotations and demanding itineraries, while guest accommodations remain suitable for owners, expedition teams, or additional personnel traveling alongside the mothership.
Growing Activity Across Damen’s Yacht Portfolio
According to YachtBuyer MarketWatch, the largest yacht database in the world, Damen Yachting currently has five yachts in build or on order, including the second Xplorer 60 expedition yacht, which remains available for sale.
The Xplorer 60 was developed for long-range, self-sufficient cruising, featuring hybrid diesel-electric propulsion, Ice Class capability, a certified helideck, and accommodation for up to 12 guests across six cabins. Damen states the yacht is capable of up to 30 days of autonomous operation, supporting extended cruising far from traditional marina infrastructure. YachtBuyer reviewed the model in 2025, highlighting its expedition versatility, hybrid systems, and operational flexibility.
Recent activity at the Dutch yard has also included the launch of the custom Damen 75m Hybrid expedition yacht from its Vlissingen facility. Scheduled for delivery later this year, the project features hybrid propulsion, adaptable deck spaces, and owner-led interiors focused on extended autonomous cruising. Damen Yachting has also remained active in the support yacht market following the recent sale of the 46m YS 4508 Bad Company Support.
