WATCH: Next-Gen Nordhavn 46 Motor Yacht Launched 37 Years After Original Model

The first hull of the second-generation Nordhavn 46 has reached a major milestone, entering the water at Nordhavn’s South Coast factory in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and marking the first physical launch stage for a model intended to reintroduce one of the builder’s most influential passagemakers.

For Nordhavn, the moment carries extra significance. Thirty-seven years after the original Nordhavn 46 first entered the water from the same facility, the company has now launched its reworked successor - a yacht designed to carry forward the model that helped establish the long-range adventure cruising sector.

Revisiting One of Nordhavn’s Defining Models

The original Nordhavn 46 holds a unique place in the builder’s history. Introduced nearly four decades ago, it became one of the first full-displacement motoryachts specifically marketed as an ocean-going cruiser for owner-operators seeking extended passagemaking capability.

Nordhavn states that more N46s have crossed oceans and completed circumnavigations than any other production motoryacht in history, helping establish the template that would shape much of the company’s future range.

Thirty-seven years ago, the original N46 was launched by this very factory. After that boat splashed, a new phenomenon in adventure boating was born. We expect equally exciting things to happen following the launch of this re-imagined 46.”

The new 46 keeps the same mission profile but updates almost every major technical area. Measuring just over 14m (46ft 3in), the model introduces twin engines in place of the earlier single-screw arrangement, revised hull geometry, modern construction methods, and a larger engineering space centered around a near walk-in engine room. Fuel capacity has also grown by more than 30 percent compared with the original platform.

The redesign also introduces lithium battery integration, proportional thruster controls, stabilizers as standard, and equipment aimed at longer periods away from shore power including diesel heating, air conditioning, and a full-size washer and dryer.

Bringing the N46 Into Nordhavn’s Modern Era

While the second-generation remains visually recognizable as a Nordhavn, the exterior moves away from some traditional styling cues associated with earlier models.

The original Portuguese bridge arrangement has been removed to create more interior volume, while the profile adopts the cleaner lines seen across newer Nordhavn models. Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis replaced traditional tank testing during development, helping optimize hull efficiency through digital modeling methods.

The production approach also follows the strategy introduced on the Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51, with the yacht delivered as a largely complete specification package rather than extensive individual customization. Only the dinghy and watermaker remain outside the standard build configuration.

The first hull will now return to outfitting for interior completion before moving into sea trials. Delivery plans call for shipment to Dana Point, California during mid-summer, where final commissioning and owner training will take place before the owners begin cruising along the California coast and into Mexico.

Positioning the 46 MK II in Nordhavn’s Passagemaker Family

According to YachtBuyer MarketWatch, the world's largest yacht database, the new Nordhavn 46 arrives in an important position within the yard's smaller passagemaker lineup, effectively bridging the gap between the entry-focused Nordhavn 41, the raised-pilothouse Nordhavn 475, and the larger Nordhavn 51.

At 13m, the Nordhavn 41 targets couples seeking serious long-range cruising in a more compact package, with twin-engine redundancy, ocean-rated capability and ranges exceeding 2,500 nautical miles. It also introduced many of the engineering ideas that now appear on newer models. The N41 remains one of the builder’s most technically focused sub-50ft yachts.

Stepping upward, the 14.4m Nordhavn 475 brings the brand’s raised pilothouse arrangement into its smallest format, adding flybridge space, an extended cockpit, Portuguese bridge access, and accommodations for up to five guests. Above that sits the 15.4m Nordhavn 51, which has already been YachtBuyer reviewed, bringing flybridge cruising, twin-engine redundancy, and transatlantic capability into the sub-16m segment.

Positioned at 14.10m, the second-generation Nordhavn 46 now slots directly between these models - retaining the heritage of the original N46 while introducing the latest engineering approach seen across Nordhavn’s modern generation of passagemakers.
